Why not clear-lens, instead of UV-filters?

UV filters are used by photographers capturing on film to eliminate the haze that shows up when there is a lot of UV -- but I believe this is only a problem with film, not CCDs. So why not just use a clear-lens/filter instead of the UV filters to protect your lens? You get less degradation (even if UV filters are already low); maybe with special coatings, you can prevent flaring as well. Does the UV protect the CCDs from degrading? I doubt it. From my reading, UV filters really offer no benefit to digital cameras in terms of filtering haze, or protecting the CCD, etc. (although one source I read said it DOES prevent CCD from aging as fast, but to a degree that's insignificant).

Edit: I've heard that they could protect the camera when shooting directly into the sun, although this may be just a rumor.

I never said I was right, I'm just wondering if this is the case -- if clear filters are indeed "better" in my situation.

Sorry, if you feel like that.

I just don't know if there is a clear ( Zero effect ) filter or ( Zero optical change ) lens. Also if there were one, (also preventing flares, reflections etc) i can't imagine one without a high price. So, i think, if it prevents something; like reflections or flares, it's name probably won't be "clear filter".

There are clear filters on the market, called protection filters.

And yes, no UV filtering is needed for digital. Talking about (and buying) UV filters for protection purposes is a legacy from film era.

And like I have said about 12 times on this forum already, it does not hurt using an old UV filter if you happen to have one, but there is no point in buying one anymore.

Would you please send me a link or the keyword for searching for it?

Every protection filter i found on google/ebay is UV filter. starting from $2 and climbing up.

The thing that still makes me to buy a multi-coated hoya uv filter for my dvx, is, resistance to reflections, etc.

A simple glass may distort the shot. And it will make this when trying to protect the real lens of my dvx. If i didn't have it, i wouldn't have those ghosting effects and flares. But if i still want to protect my lens and if i want to put something in front of my lens, that must be something which reduces visual quality distortions totaly made by that protection "thing".

So if that "clear protection glass" you tell about, can also minimize these disadvantages, please let me know so i can order it. ( I mean it. I'm on the search for a protection "thing." these days. ):engel017:
 
Having UV absorbtion in the filter adds no use value to it, but it does not do any harm either. So if you can not find a clear protection filter cheaper than equal qulity UV buy the UV and do not worry about it.

I do not think anybody is advocating using just a piece of glass. These clear protection filters are multicoated optical quality glass just like all other good filters. What comes to flare protection and such NO filter is always better than any filter, less glass surfaces for the light to bounce about. You need sunshades, matteboxes, french flags etc to fight flare.
