A Mogul socket can safely handle much larger wattage bulbs. Standard bulbs max out at what, about 250 watts? Mogul bulbs are available to at least 1,000 watts and possibly higher.

E26/E27 sockets holding a globe that is over a pound is somewhat distasteful, you can hear the globe shifting if you flip it over, side to side etc, not ideal for China balls but I use them anyway.
Mogul setup would be more robust, safer, durable and you can get some very nice ceramic bases with Mogul that may be hard to come by with medium sockets.
