Why macs over pc's

Why do the general populous think that Macs are the best when it comes to video editing/photoshop/general creative stuff?

Our director of comms wants us to buy 2 macs for video editing/photoshop/general creative stuff because they are better.

unless I'm missing something, my current pc enables far more customization, is cheaper to run and has more available software.

WHAT AM I MISSING?

.....please don't tell me that the apparent "good looks" of a mac are a driver behind this.

It's a left over from the days when Macs were in fact superior for this type of work. It hasn't been the case for quite some time (they are both very suitable).

I'm not offering you much, I know -- It will always be difficult to convince an Apple fan that "Macs aren't the s**t".

All that being said, Apple has made many moves that seem to indicate their lack of interest in pursuing their "pro" line of products. Personally, that's really the only thing I'd be concern about.

It's perception. I'm looking around at what's on desks on our little project here at Sony, and it's about 75% Windows machines to about 25% Macs. These are users who pretty much stick to high-end feature work, and can afford whatever they like by way of equipment. At this point it's not about the system, it's about the operator.

That said, if you are in the Mac world, you basically pay more $$$ for a safer playground: if you buy memory, peripherals, whatever for a Mac, you're more or less guaranteed smooth integration and operation in exchange for fewer options and the higher price tag. In the PC world you'll pay less for the same degree of performance, but accept the chance that any given chunk of hardware may or may not actually work for your particular, individually-configured system, when you plug it in...

For my part, strictly on the cost/performance basis I am unlikely to ever buy a Mac. But if someone wants to provide one, and for whatever reason prefers that I work on it, that's okay.
