Why is the trimmer useless?

Maybe its me, but on my old machine the trimmer was useless for previewing on an external monitor...it would just sit there and readjust something for a couple minutes before it ever actually previewed what you were trimming. Then, when you went back to the timeline, it was terribly slow in getting that preview up, also.

I thought it would be different...that it was just my old machine and version 6 of Vegas. Not true. The trimmer is still fully useless. Does anyone else get this?

Even if you're not getting a preview out, I think it's a stretch to call it "fully useless." It still does 99% of what it's supposed to do.

Is this just DV footage? Is it on an external or internal hard drive? What other processing is going on (virus protection, etc.)?

Usually, a lag before playing something indicates a problem with the device the footage is on.

How full is the hard drive?

Trimmer works fine here - as it does on my Core Duo MacBook Pro -

In fact, many get better playback from HD files via trimmer than on the timeline - I'd agree with David. You've probably got some machine issues - have you tried Vegas 7 or 8? In Vegas 8 you can get video playback in the trimmer now.

I have a new core 2 quad system with a 2 terebyte RAID array that I just built. I'm sure its not the computer because the symptoms are exactly the same as they were on the old system under Vegas 6 (I now use 7). I am previewing through the camera. Maybe an additional DV bridge is necessary? What would you all recomend?

I have had some other issues with capturing initially that I think I have worked out mostly. The only problem is that now the camera stops playing audio (even through the headphone jack and the audio out jacks) while digitizing is going on. Is this something vegas is able to control? I didn't think it was, but after it captures the audio has been captured also, even though it is somehow turned off durring the actual batch.

Thank,
Eric.

Sorry Dave,

What I meant was that now you could toggle off the trimmer from playing in the preview window - gave you additional trimmer function - you can even work the trimmer now while playing back from the timeline, viewing both.

sorry for the confusion...

Munchy - something's not right - maybe it's the passthrough on your camera - I've never used a camera for passthrough so I'm not sure what extra problems that could cause - I can't imagine any though...

so what you're saying is you cannot press play on the trimmer and have full frame playback on your external monitor? I can honestly say it's not Vegas - or you'd have oodles of users bringing up the issue
