Why is playback hanging up?

I normally use FCP6 for editing, but I'm trying to get some editing work with a local videographer who uses Premiere. I'm working on a practice project for him using some of his wedding footage, but I can just barely use it because it's stuttering like Mel Tillis in a whorehouse. (I may have just revealed my age.) It's bad enough on the normal sections, but I've just applied a time warp effect to a 10-sec. clip, and it almost won't play. The CTI moves, but the images jump, and then hang up completely for five or six seconds before finally catching up with the CTI.

I'm running a dual-core 2.6gHz Mac Pro with 6gb RAM. I've got the video stored on 750gb RAID. FCP6 is silky smooth. I really don't understand why I'm having this issue.

Any idears?

tex,

find out if the avi file was rendered with what codec, i.e. quicktime, microsoft avi, uncompressed avi , etc.....

i use premiere , both PP 2.0 and CS3 and found that playing back of uncompressed avi sometimes does the same.

i would try and get the original tape, render the clip yourself, then do the effect in premiere.

if you cant, get you FCP guy to render it in microsoft dv avi file, then import and try again.

sorry if this is simple, not really an expert but have some extensive home experience.

always the best

I'm having the same experience here.

CS4 on an 8 core Mac Pro with Radeon 3780 Graphics.

I thought Premiere supported ProRes playback - CS3 could at least playback ProRes fairly decent, but CS4 can't playback any ProRes QT file faster than 1-3 fps. It's absolutely unusable. P2 playback works fine, but any QT file doesn't play back smoothly at all. Even if it's a QT file encoded as DVCPRO HD!

To play QT DVCPro HD you need to use the encoder from Raylight. works well but its expensive. ( I had to get it so I could cope with a cross platform workflow)

The issue was caused by Apple (FCP) which continues to be so beligerently proprietary that cross platform is just a mere notion to them.
