Why is picking a new camera so hard?!

Well, after having the GL2 for 2 years...i sold it and have money for a new camera..After searcing, reading, revising, posting, asking and thinking about it all...I've come to the conclusion that...i need to hurry, cause its costing me money NOT having a camera... Af first it was the dvx100a, xl2 or Fx1...Dont wanna get the fx since im mainly doing music videos and film like projects and even with the "cineframe" i think it's called...i still dont think it looks filmic at all. I kinda like the xl2's DOF and the low saturated out the box quality. I also like the fact that it's VERY cusomizable and can suit many filming situations given in the hands of someone that can set each shot up. And iv'e seen some amazing things shot on the DVX...like the short "water" was def. amazing. Another thing is, i usually do alot of CC in post so i'd want a camera unlike the GL2 which will look good out the box as well.
I know it's totally my option but ive read every possible thing in the past few months on these camera's and am still VERY stuck at this point... i have about 4500ish to spend...

My options now are...
(1)
Dvx100b-3400 after M.I.R
batteries-100
pelican case-200
cavision bellow w/few filters-800

(2)
Canon xl2-4400
Nice cardboarding carrying case coincidently the same one its shipped in.
The happiness of a nice big professional camera knowing that your only 18 and look younger and people think you can't even spell the word Camcorder.

Is there anything else i should take into consideration that i might be missing? help me please...

Yeah, im my opinion the XL2 isn't worth the extra $1000. Just think what you could get with the extra grand. (which u have listed) Go for the dvx. But, I'm biased towards the dvx, so don't listen to me.

PS - Plus, plan on another $1500 for another interchangable lens because the stock lens that comes with the xl2 is quite limited, in my opinion.

You have clearly done tons of thinking on this and tons of research - GREAT!

Problem is... You are at a point now where the decision is all yours. You have to pick the cam that fits your needs and has the image you like.

May sound silly, but make a pros and cons list on the two cameras and see what jumps out...

Or there is this...

The XL2 is crap; go with the DVX100b

giuseppe, go with the DVX bro. I was in the same boat as you and I feel like I dodged a bullet after getting the DVX....

I know who you are also... Been to your site in the past. You had a slamming reel on there before.

What is it you're trying to say John?

I think a concise, direct reply without all the fluff would be clearer.

I was also in your position spending countless hours debating how I should spend my hard earned money. I would remember one good piece of advice. Looks like and is are two entirely different things. Don't buy a camera because it look like it's better than the rest , buy it because it is.

LOL Pookie

Just running the usual smack.

In fact; a user just today had me scope out his reel (With a ton of XL2 in it) and it is amazing work.

I'd still get a b though

Man, you guys reply quick...i might get the DVX just to come to the board more. Some people on another board were/are trying to convince me to go for HD as in the sony cam. But i've yet to see anything remoltly close to looking like film from the sony HD cameras.

You mean HDV? The HVX will be the real thing and more. For (approximately) the price of an HDV Sony or Canon, you could get into an HVX. Unless your budget allows for it, get the DVX.

this is probably a silly question, but which would you guys pick if cost was no option: the XL-H1 or the HVX?

(again, silly question to ask on DVX user, but I'm sure i'll get a good reply from at least someone, and a funny but truthful reply from John Hudson  )

Well, if cost was no object, I'm sure we'd all get VariCams or Infinitys or something like that.

But with an unlimited wallet and only those two to choose from, it'd have to be HVX plus a whole lotta cards!

Plus, if I had unlimited budget, I'd need a B52 hangar to store all my stuff!

H1 is still just HDV. Unless you plan on carrying a big ass D5 of HDCAM-SR recorder to make it worth you while.

giuseppe palumbo-

Can you go to a camera store near you, with a blank mini DV tape, and take some footage? This really might help your decision. Thing is, they are both excellent cameras. I can see you getting attached to either one you purchase. But on a site called dvxuser.com, chances are you will find that most here favor our beloved DVX.

I have seen some great XL2 footage. I do think its more digital video looking but I still absolutely love the image. It's beautiful. Not quite as 16mm film looking as the DVX. But each will produce gorgeous imagery at this price point. So the decision is really up to you. I would really urge you to stick the last nail in this coffin and drive somewhere that has both cameras for you to pop a blank tape in. Most reputable places will let you do that, no problem.

Out of the box, the images are distinctly different. So, seeing raw footage might help you lean one way or the other.

Rick
PS JUST KIDDING. DONT BE A FREAKING FOOL!! GET THE DVX, MAN. WHAT A NO BRAINER! SHEESH!

I wish i lived somewhere where i could actually do that...but ive never even seen em for sale in stores haha. I dunno, ill make up my mind eventually...I can't believe it's this hard though...I've read up on these cameras since they've been out, and now at this point in time...I dont know what to do.

All kidding aside giuseppe, you will probably be ecstatic with either purchase. But speaking from experience, if you got a DVX you will probably absolutely love it. It really does create beautiful images right out of the box. And it really does give you SO many things to manually have control over. And, it is much more inexpensive than the XL2. Why? Removable lens. Is that necessary? Its a nice feature but probably not necessary.

So, if you absolutely can't drive anywhere to see these cameras the I would suggest taking a big deep breath and using the eenie, meenie, miney, moe approach.

Rick
PS Where are you located? Perhaps someone here knows of where you can check these out in person?

Is the film quality on the HVX better than the H1s? I'm concerned with picture quality, but also the whole cinematic aspect.

My guess, again, is yes, but I like hearing people educated on the subject talk about it, heh
