I'm editing a new project with about 40gb of raw footage, with cs4 on an intel xeon dual core 3.0 ghz processor. the footage is 1080 60i and it just seems way slower to edit, and choppy on playback on basic transitions like dissolves instead of playing smooth like with sd footage that i've edited on cs3. it's a real pain in the ass to edit with just trying to view the footage to analyze cuts is costing me way too much time and i' won't make my deadline at this pace. any suggestions? do i need to buy a fatty video card like canopus or something?

i should add i'm using xp pro and have a raid 0 configuration, 4 gb ram but xp only uses 2.6 of that. do i need to upgrade my os?

Can you be more specific: what kind of "raw footage"?

eg. 1080 30i AVCHD material will behave very different than the HDV you might be used to

With the same type of footage on the same computer are you trying to say CS3 is more smooth than CS4 when editing? Any other differences in the setup?

"raw" as in uncut footage. it was compressed to an mpeg format. I've never edited with hdv nor avchd. 1080 60i is the setting it was filmed in and it was passed along to me from another company to edit.

i think cs4 is fine when cutting up sd footage (haven't checked it yet), but the hd is a b*tch to work with, i need a new workflow because even trying to play back a basic dissolve is painfully slow....and by that i mean slower than what i'm used to, which i don't have patience for anymore.

So it's mpeg, not raw footage? Use mediainfo if you don't know the specifics

Something is wrong with your computer, footage, or settings

It should edit like a breeze

Do you have red render bar? Do your sequence settings match the footage?

wedding.mpeg

type: Movie
Video: 29.97 fps, 1440 x 1080 (1.3333)
audio: 4800hz - 32-bit Float- Stereo

i have a render bar. there is no color unless I alter a clip and then it's read, when i render it turns green above the affected clip. Still choppy on play back unless i render, usually i can edit and view playback on light effects smoothly without needing to render first. sd 720x480 plays smooth as it did in cs3. somethings up with the hd footage.
