why is my adjustment layer opaque?

when i create an adjustment layer, it is equivalent to a white solid. never had this problem before. is this a glitch? anyone know how to make AE create an ACTUAL adjustment layer?

Technically, an adjustment layer IS just a comp-sized solid with its adjustment layer switch turned on. The switch is the one in between the motion blur and 3D switches. The icon looks the same as it does in Photoshop:

I’ve never known AE to start creating new ones without switching them on properly. Are you just trying to create them in a normal fashion, or are they being created by a script or something?

problem solved....

the layer beneath it was set to an alpha track matte, which would render the transparent adjustment layer white.
