Why is Mini DV tape BETTER than a DVD??

I've burned footage to my DVD... looks.. eh... not that great....
Kind of dull.... not like the original footage....

BUT.... I copy the same footage over to my mini DV... (tape export) AND...

PRESTO! Beautiful images.... looks just like the original camera footage.

I've set the DVD to GOP 3/12, progressive, 2 pass VBR 7bit max...
burns o.k...

is it due to the compression???

How do the pros get there DVDs looking like magic?

Thanks,
Pimp D

i think there may be 3 options:
- mpg-2 coder of bad (i mean really bad) quality. or wrong settings (check you dont have some weird video processing set with your compression software: bad manipulation on contrast or sat. can give you dull images)
- bad compression settings (too compressed), even though i wouldn't say it makes images 'dull', but i guess that could be the interpretation in very low light level conditions.
- dvd player of bad quality

i've been professionally producing commercial dvds for years and also put my shorts and docs on dvd many times. I suggest to not mess up with the gop structure and tech settings. just decide the compression level (go for CBR unless you have space issues in the disk, at least 6000kbs).

Chroma rez can be reduced to half if you use a DV codec that doesn't smooth. If you smooth the DV first with the DV being in an uncompressed timeline, then make a DVD from that, it will look better. However, this only effects chroma resolution and should not make the DVD dull, bright, or anything else like that. The only difference you'll see is say, on bright colours with sharp edges.

I'm ashamed to say but I started reading that over the weekend and found myself utterly lost as I'm a total idiot when it comes to the technical aspects.....

<---That's me getting beat over the head by your article...............

Sorry about that.... I did a Keynote presentation version I took to some FCP user groups and it went down well, but I guess it's much easier when I speak it and have interactive question sessions.

Thanks everybody.... I have much to read about it...

They can put a man on the moon, but they can't make it simple to download your images to dvd.

I always output my final from premiere 6 as a microsoft DV AVI then hand the whole mess over to ulead movie factory and tell it to burn a DVD. I don't read any of the settings, I just go next, next , next through the ulead menu till I get to "Burn DVD" and presto I get georgeous looking DVD's....Nothing could be simpler. Proir to this I used to turn the avi's into mpeg's and mess around with settings and produce a whole bunch of coasters.
