Why is it GROUND PLASTIC instead of GROUND GLASS?

My first prototype adapters used hand ground glass using 320 grit aluminium oxide and backpolished using the 'nevea cream' method.

I used a large round glass UV filter and a similar grinding method. I also had to drill the center hole with a diamond bore bit. The whole process was really time consuming and when I put the thing in the adapter, just to my eye, the image didn't look different from the image produced by the original gg.

I just set up my brand new SGpro today and notice the gg is like 1/4 the thickness of the one in my M2. I'm really looking forward to using it.

Hey Andrew,

Not discounting what Wayne says at all! Just doing some thinking out loud. =)

So basically, it's impractical to ask for a Spinning Glass instead of Optical Grade Plastic and it will offer no benefit over Optical Grade Plastics?

Just to add to the matter of impracticality (and to make you laugh), I just broke one of my toughened (tempered) glass disks between posts :D I only tapped it slightly. These 3 disk cost me £100 each :)

So the thought of it shattering at high RPM makes me shiver

Looking forward to hear how you get on with the SGpro

Hey!

I have read that HDD units are sometimes made of glass disks, but till now I only saw metal disc.. Maybe modified HDD unit would work.. And it is allready high speed and with housing..

Who would know..
