Why is guillermo del toro considering so amazing?

He's made only one great film (pan's labyrinth) in my opinion. The rest have been average at best. I don't get how he is considered this amazing filmmaker. Just sayin.

I'd ask the same thing about M. Night Shyamalan. I liked The Sixth Sense, otherwise meh. Who else saw The Happening? Almost a decade later and I'm still pissed about wasting an hour and a half of my life on that pile of dog crap.

I think Hollywood is kind of like "big music". Someone gets "tapped" as the next big thing, whether it be actor, director, etc. and then they are put on a pedestal and "sold to everyone" as the second coming.

Foreign-born gets you in the door when you otherwise might not.

You are "exotic". And the worse your English-language skill the more artsy you are.

btw, I've never seen anything that del Toro has done and prior to just looking him up I couldn't name a single credit of his. But I am not much of a cinephile and much of his work is in the fantasy genre which isn't my thing.

Richard, you been hiding or something? Then the del Toro bug bites you in the... :undecided

If you haven't seen it, check out his first film, Cronos (1993).
Stars Ron Perlman and is a pretty darn good first film- not a fantasy film but a horror/ love story (but not romantic love).
Saw it when it came out, and several times since. Still like it.

I highly doubt that its just be foreign and show up.

Hellboy was mildly entertaining.

No love for Unbreakable? Signs?

I think Unbreakable is probably his best (that I've seen), I quite liked "The Visit" (from a few years ago), heard Split is pretty decent.

Sorry, I got confused... thought you were talking about Benicio del Toro. Guillermo was supposed to be working on a Haunted Mansion movie, and I've been waiting to hear more on that.

Hopefully his "reveredness" will assist in allowing him to be the director some think he is. Speaking of M. Night, I really enjoyed The Village.

I explain Michael Bay by noting that he isn't a DP. And I was talking about DP's.

the immigrant stereotype benefit:

I note that the DP for The Big Short is a foreign-born DP.

Where did you mention DPs??? Guillermo del Toro is a writer/director.

"Guillermo del Toro is a writer/director."

Well, if he were truly "amazing" I would have known that, now wouldn't I have?

I think we've answered this one.

Not amazing.

Yes, I understood. I think you need to look more closely at the large body of work the "foreigner" is doing before they get in the door.

We are in an world market today, so there's going to be more "foreigners".

Yes, a world market today indeed. But the DP world on feature films shot in the U.S. is particularly international. Far and away more than any other position on a feature film being shot in the U.S. And that isn't anything new. It has been that way for decades.

Why is the DP position on features in the U.S. more international than the Production Designer position, the Producer position, or even the Director position?

What is the reason for that if not a preference in the U.S. for foreign-born DP's? And if there is in fact a preference on U.S. feature films for foreign-born DP's, a foreign-born DP at times, but not always, has an advantage over a U.S.-born DP with an equally impressive body of work.

btw, I am currently doing EPK on a feature film and the DP is Bojan Bazelli. He's Czech. And he must be really good because he has a heavy accent.

Am surprised by this foreign vs local thing that is mentioned here. Don't you guys go abroad and shoot? If so, then why the hell complain when some "foreign born DP" shoots a Hollywood film?

I loved M. Night Shyamalan's Signs, Unbreakable and The Sixth Sense. Since these days he is making movies at 5 or 9 million dollars and out of the studio system, I am sure the pressures would be off and soon you would see many original stuff from him.
