Why I started making video/film

I've seen a lot of threads on here about inspiration for work, critiques and praises of people's submissions for festivals, and tons of other info. I haven't yet found a thread that asked the question: Why did you get into this industry? Was it a movie you saw? A TV show? A fascination with gear? A role model or teacher? I'll start:

I joined the video production program at my highschool for Freshmen year. You had to interview, it was a selected group of 15-20 (out of a school of over 2,500 kids) and I was accepted. The program focused on televising newscasts of our morning announcements to the school, live during second period. I enjoyed the desk, running video board, directing, etc... but really fell in love with doing graphic intros. We would get handed an intro from a local news station with flying logos, video of newscasts, location work, etc... and be told "duplicate this with our stuff". And we did. It was great. The program won a Golden Apple award for Education Excellence in 2000, and one of my intros was shown during the ceremony.

Anyway, after that I really fell in love with music videos, creating them, directing my own concepts, playing with lighting and editing to achieve different styles I saw in major markets.

And that's basically my intro and path.. how about you?

I've gotten into it fairly simply. When I was a kid (between 3-5 years old) I began to have favorite movies. Star Wars, Terminator 2, and Jurassic Park were my favorite. My mom told me about Spielberg one day, and I decided I wanted to be a director.

As time went on, I went through different career dreams, from paleontology to journalist. As a Junior in high school, I realized that all my passions (music, drawing, art, photography, etc.) could actually all be put to use in making films.

As I was considering becoming director again (it had been years since I could remember considering it) I was digging through some old papers and found something interesting. It was a letter we wrote to our 4th Grade teacher so he could get to know us. The letter started "My name is Diego Castellanos. I want to be a movie director..."

I guess something in my heart has always been extremely attracted to movies, and when I put all those things together I figured I'd actually go through with it.

So I'd like to think I was born to be a director. Of course it's a long and wild ride ahead of me, but I hope I'm right.

I started with a fisher price PXL 2000, then stopped for many years and opened a recording studio. Then my clients wanted videos so I bought a DVX, became a member here and learned everything I know. I shot about 20 videos, Now I'm on my 5th feature and my 3rd Camera.

I have no idea why I started. I guess I never really had to start, as I've been doing something related to film/video my whole life. I guess at some point I just "realized" what I was doing and started officially. It just fits who I am, I suppose.
