Why Hollywood may be shutting down Monday...

If you only want to write low-budget independent films, go ahead and stay out of the guild, but if you want to write larger films, you need to be in the WGA.

I have written several, and four are in already in pre-production. Others are in the hands of agents and / or producers. I have written my ass off to get to this point, and all on my own merit. Some I did for free, others for peanuts. Someday, when I'm confident my work stands on it's own, I'll ask for more. Just my way. Others will differ, and that's what makes the world so interesting, for lack of a better word.

Your comment assumes all writers who have written filmed movies are in the WGA, which I strongly doubt.

In addition, not all Indies are low budget, and often the stories are far more interesting and poignant than the over-priced crap filmed for mass markets. Money can and does have a disastrous dumbing-down effect on the arts.

Being in a union may or may not gaurantee fair pay and benefits, but it certainly does not gaurantee one is a better writer. I am not against the WGA by any means, it's just not the right path for me. I'm sure I'm not alone on this.

Enough said by me. I think my postion is clear.

The more others disagree with me, the more confident I am that I'm doing something right.

I look forward to the day when fairness is instinct, not regulated.

One can always hope.

Yeah....child labour laws should never have been created. They should have waited for factory owners to become decent people on their own schedule...

It's not like big business owners try and get away with making as much money as possible while paying as little as possible....if that were true, they would hire illegals or outsource jobs to 3rd world countries.

They are always fair and above board, so workers don't need any protection. Thier vaules of less government intervention and lower taxes coupled with the idea of making it on your own sweat and steam are classic. Competition is what makes for success.

That is why companies like US auto makers never had to lobby the government to tax cheaper and better imports so that they would be forced to make better products. That's why they never tried buying up public transit and dismantling it so that people would buy more cars. Workers don't need unions for protection...just like big business doesn't need to pay off the government to not change environmental laws so that they won't be forced to spend more money being clean and efficient.

Big business never does anything wrong, or asks for handouts from the government, or cheats workers...they make it on good honest work, and so should you, John Q Public...so stop complaining.

We should all long for the time when there were no unions, before the depression, when 60 percent of America lived below the poverty line. Those were the good old days.
