Why has no one remade Forbidden Planet yet?

Hollywood loves a good remake. It's more of a sure thing at the box office to remake a successful movie than gamble on something brand new. Hollywood remakes everything, so why has no one tackled Forbidden Planet yet? you get to design a brand new Robby the Robot, there's a part for a sexy up and coming female actor, space ships, fantastic sets, and a script inspired by Shakespeare. I love the original, but it looks like a 1950's sci fi film, as it should since it was made in 1956. Generally remakes are disasters, but after 50 years and incredible leaps and bounds in FX production a new take on a classic can be a fun movie.

I guess there's only so much money Producers are willing to risk on movie projects and before all the cool artistry can begin there's a bunch of politics and finances to work out. Sometimes it all comes together, sometimes it doesn't.

I love the idea of a trilogy based on the Krell technology. But please, don't let Peter Jackson work on it and turn it into a 20 hour marathon. We'd have to spend one entire movie just watching them build Robby the robot.

You just should NOT remake classics. The best features of the film are the B movie traits, remove these with megabuck technology or CGI and the story itself just returns to a version of the Tempest. The single dimensional actors, script and SFX just can't be tampered with. It's a bit like remaking the Birds, or Casablanca. If you want to make a good movie, pick a new subject.

Well, exceptions do exist. John Carpenter's The Thing, David Cronenberg's The Fly, Martin Campbell's Casino Royale (granted not exactly a remake, but still), Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much, Brian DePalma's Scarface, Philip Kaufman's Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's 11, all movies that I'm glad exist.

A few more exceptions; Cape Fear, War of the Worlds, Dawn of the Dead, Thomas Crown Affair, 3:10 to Yuma.

the problem IMO is never the megabuck technology or the CGI, it's always bad story telling. Usually they try to rework the story and that's where they get it wrong in many remakes. if you stick to the original story or do something slightly different but still a good story, an updated look with new actors can work fine.

I mean come on, 50 years? That's enough time to pass for a remake.

Take a look at this list of upcoming remakes. I have to say there's quite a few I'm looking forward to. Westworld? That's a classic that could stand a make over. I wouldn't mind seeing a new Logan's Run.

A recent example of a remake that was very puzzling is Total Recall. It wasn't a bad movie on it's own, but it just kind of slapped you upside the head as a remake. Total Recall is all about going to Mars. IN the remake, they never go to Mars. I kept going, when are they going to Mars? And then, why aren't they going to Mars? It's like remaking Dawn of the Dead with no Zombie Apocalypse. You might spend the whole movie going, Ok this isn't a bad movie, but when are we going to see Zombies?

I bet if you look at the wiki list of remakes you'll find a movie you liked that you did not know was a remake.
