Why films withhold movies that have already been made?

My friend and I were discussing this. Like in the case of Pirates of the Caribbean. The had that movie done at about the same time the second one was done. We were trying to figure out why they don't release it like a couple weeks after the previous goes out of theater. The best I could come up with to explain was that they need to milk to first one financially with DVD sales, HBO, etc. He still seems to think it wouldn't change sales. Anyone know?

Well, for starters, they probably weren't done. They may have been done with principal photography, but there is a tremendous amount of post work, which I imagine they prioritize.

But you are on to something with your theory as well. It is a business after all and making us anticipate drives up box office.

And, in the case of this film, I hope they spent the time actually making the film good. Because the second one was pretty bad.

Probably to build up anticipation and hype.

Plus, they probably didn't want the films to steal each others thunder.

And, the exact date a movie is released DRASTICALLY impacts its success in the box office. I'm talking as little as one week. You have to take in factors such as the competition, holidays, etc .(It probably wouldn't matter as much for Pirates, but who knows?) Just look at Grindhouse.

Are you sure they were completely done? Maybe they were done with principal photography and had to wait on the VFX guys.

It's very confusing to decipher which movies discussed.

In the commentary (and elsewhere) it's stated that the first "Pirates" was made to be a standalone and the "Curse of the Black Pearl" was put on in case there were sequels, because, "who knew."

Then everybody was called back to do 2 and 3 as a single unit, shooting at the same time.

If we're talking about one and two, they were shot at completely different times and 2 didn't even exist when 1 came out.

If we're talking about Dead Man's Chest and At World's End, disregard what I'm saying.
