Why does this image look so bad...

I have exported hundreds of still images from my films using:

File - Export - Using QuickTime Conversion and selecting Still Image

This always worked great, until I upgraded from 6.0 to 6.02

Now, no matter what I do, the image comes out blotchy.

Here is how the image looks in FCP:
ITD-Good.jpg

Here is how it looks after I export:
ITD-Bad.jpg

I have tried this with different clips, colors, projects, and they all come out blotchy (even images I exported without a problem in the past).

Does anyone have any idea what might of changed in 6.02? Is there a better way to export images?

Chris

Chris,

What application are you using to view your exported still. Is it in FCP as well?

Have you tried marking in and out on a single frame then exporting an image sequence?

Head into the preferences for QTPRo.

Check 'Use high-quality video settings when available'.

I know you probably know this... but this has happened to me a few times... un-checking and re-checking it sometimes cleans the image up for some reason. Like it is a bit sticky.. who knows..

First, thanks for all the suggestions, but unfortunately, none of them made a difference.

I did a little more experimenting and something strange is happening.

I select a still in my timeline and it looks perfect in the canvas.

I then select File - Export Using QuickTime Conversion

As soon as I select that menu, the image in the canvas gets all blotchy, even before I make my selection. As soon as the menu goes away, the image in the canvas returns to normal. Zak, are you seeing this too?

Anyone have, any thoughts on what to try next?

Chris

I went into the setting for my sequence and here is what it says:

Aspect Ratio: HD(960x720)(16:9)

Under QuickTime Video Settings it says:

Compressor: DVCProHD 720p60

Are these correct? It certainly looks fine on the screen, but as I said, as soon as I try to export anything it gets blotchy (even before the export happens).

Chris, I don't know anything about this particular issue (still on 6.0 until I don't hear about any problems) - but yes, those are the correct settings for your sequence (assuming you shot 720P)

Try this, I've had some issues with 6.0.2 as well but nothing like this.

Make a new project, import one of your clips in, try to export and see if that does the same thing.

I had something like this happen when I tried to use the frame rate converter in it would target other clips that I had in my bins...so strange.

If that doesn't do it, looks like a call to apple!

Thanks for the suggestions, but nothing seems to work.

I have found a few other people on the net with the same problem, but no solutions yet.

Is there a place at Apple to go for support or report a bug?

My suggestion is going through Compressor instead of doing a Quicktime conversion.

I myself have never had very good results doing a conversion directly from FCP.

I find, if I export as a QT Movie of the same settings as my timeline.. then encode that file from in QT Pro it looks better. Unsure why...

Going through compressor also usually produces much better results.
