Why does Motion operate so SLOWLY?

I'm creating some simple snow effects in Motion, but my Mac Pro is taking forever to process even the simplest of tasks such as deleting a text layer. Every time I click on anything, the spinning wheel comes up for 5 seconds or so. This is very frustrating.

I have the Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT graphics card, 8 Gigs RAM, Quad Core 2.8 Ghz.

Is there a setting I can change? None of my other programs are doing this right now - just Motion.
