Why does it do that?

I'm working on a timeline with real time effects enabled. When I turn on my external monitor on, a good amount of my effects, speed ramps, dissolves, etc. have RED render bars but as soon as I turned my external monitor off all those RED bars turned to Green again! So how can I watch the completed project on my external monitor before I am ready to ouput or color correct?

Re: Why does it do that?

Since I never have my NTSC monitor off when I'm editing with FCP, I've never experienced what you describe, and can only guess that perhaps your computer only has enough processing power to play certain real-time effects when it's not mirroring them out to your NTSC monitor via Firewire.

Just render your effects, and they should play on your external monitor without a problem.

Re: Why does it do that?

No, it is FCP. Most of that got fixed with 4.5 but if you are still using 4.1 than you will have to render to view out through FW.

Takes more effort, I guess.

Re: Why does it do that?

I maybe wrong about this because the first version of FCP 4 that I used was HD (never 4.0 or 4.1), but I am able to get a real time preview over firewire if I set my RT to unlimited and low quality. This is on a 1 GHz iMac with 512MB of RAM. Mind you I had to turn off the preference to alert to notify me of dropped frames just to get any work done, but DVX100Shooter...I think I remember seeing that you have a G5, so you should be able to cruise along pretty nicely. Then again, none of this may be rellevant for 4.1, but I hope something in there helped. :P

Re: Why does it do that?

Thanks...yea I had to render other parts of my project anyway so I just did the whole project at one time since I was pretty much finished editing...Now I can see everything on the monitor.
