Why does directing seem like a young persons profession?

Man, do I ever feel young. Everyone seems to have everything all put together and are just doing this as a hobby. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but it's sort of discouraging in a way. I know for a fact that many people don't take me very seriously. I look even younger than I am, even if I show up on a set with my DVX, crew and other equipment. I appreciate having found that from even younger film making was what I wanted to do and have been making movies for 5 years. I'm only 17, turning 18 this year but I like that I'm young. I have the opportunity to do and experience things that the older film makers can't anymore.

Granted the older ones do have the life experience I will never be able to pour into my writing or directing, so I suppose that there are pros and cons to being young and old.

Any situation can be either encouraging, or discouraging. It's all in how you deal with it. Us e what you have to its best advantage.

Don´t worry: Yo will become 40, too. Meanwhile enjoy moviemaking for the next 23 years: You´re on the lucky side!

You are very lucky to be your age in this time of technological advancement. 17 years ago, when I was 17, making anything other than a shoddy VHS show or maybe Super8 was monetarily waaaay out of the question, to say nothing of having a great online community for support and guidance. You have amazing opportunities in front of you . . .

Thanks for all the encouragement guys! It seems like I've got a lot of work to do and much better opportunities than some of you older generation folk had. I'm working on a tightening up the screenplay of my next short so I'll take all your wise words into consideration.

Okay, you can be quiet now :nads:

Just thought I'd jump into this thread, as I'm a fairly new director, but about to be 40 in a few months.

Another issue - at least for some - is if you start a new discipline, especially one as complicated as filmmaking, your first efforts may not be that great. If you figure your regular 40 year old has been in their current profession for a couple years, and has some seniority, to go back to newbie status and make newbie mistakes, it's not easy.
