Why do some unedited clips require rendering?

I captured video from my dvx100 in 24p as I have done many times before. After capturing the clip info indentifies it as 29.97. When I drop a segment into a 23.98 time line it requires rendering even though there are no effects, and it requires rendering even though I set the RT to low quality. I am running, no other programs, the latest Tiger, dual 2.0 G5 and Final Cut 4.5. What can cause some clips, before any editing, to require rendering an others not? I've even tried another computer to see if it was the something other than the clip. Please advise.

Because your clips and your timeline timebase don't match.

if your have a 29.97 clip, it will playback in realtime on a 29.97 timeline.

I mistakenly capture the footage with a setting of "DV NTSC 48 kHz" rather than "DV NTSC 48 kHz Advance (2:3:3:2)" Pulldown. Can I fix this without having to recapture.

Yes you can, in Cinema tools
Isn't Cinema tools built into FCP 4.5? Do I highlight the clip in the browser and go to "Tools" and choose "Remove Advanced Pull Down"?

Choose "Send To" and then "Cinema Tools". Cinema Tools is not built into FCP, it just comes with FCP, it's a totally seperate app.

If I highlight/select the canvas in the time line and go to "File" and then "Export" I see "Cinema tools audio...", Cinema tools change list...," and "Cinema tools films list...," but no "Send to." I guess I have to get familiar with this tool. When I tried to open anything it is either looking for "a program file for the previous version of this sequence" (change list) or a "Cinema Tools database" (films list).

1- It's called "Send To", not "Export.
2- My bad, there's not Send To Cinema Tools.

Just open the file in Cinema Tools. It really should be conformed BEFORE you place it in the Timeline. Once in the Timeline, well, that's a little late to tell it to change frame rates. You'll have to take the capture file into Cinema Tools. I'd suggest taking a copy of the original capture into Cinema Tools.

Okay, that works, then should I go to "Converted EDL..." and then choose "30 to 24" to get the same result if I would have captured in with the "DV NTSC 48 kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pull Down" present rather than just "DV NTSC 48 kHz."

BTW, this is not the same as highlighting the clip in the browser and going to "Tools" and choosing "Remove Advance pulldown."

Not correct. The video conformed but the audio is a couple of octaves too (s)low. Can you help out of the woods?

Okay, for anyone that might be interested in this (besides me), "Rev Telecine" seems to be a winner. Can anyone confirm that once my clips are converted, they will behave just as if I would have captured in with the correct present "Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldow," when I print to tape when it comes time to create my master?
