Why do I have to render everything?

I'm new to FCP 5 and maybe I'm just used to Vegas, but why do I have to render everything? Anything I put in a sequence, no filters or anything, I have to render to view in the canvas. I have a Power Mac G5 1.6 w/3GB Ram and Geforce 5200 FX. Is this normal or should I just wait to render when I'm finished. Thanks.

make sure your timeline settings match your clip.

go into audio/video sttings in your file menu and set them. then open a new sequence.

PainTed, I've switched from Vegas to FCP too. So far it's not as intuitive for me. I've been having other Mac aches too.

Your FPS, codec, sound rate or other seetigns are different between your clips and the sequence.

Create a new sequence and before putting any clips in it make sure the sequence setings match the clip settings. If you have 24p footage you can't stick it in a 23.98 timeline unless you remove pulldown with Cinema Tools. If you have 24pa footage you have to turn on advanced pulldown removal or tools -> remove advanced pulldown BEFORE sticking them in a 23.98 sequence.

Here is a quick little trick to get all of you sequence settings correct.

If you don't feel like going through and setting every single setting do this:

1. Locate a clip in your bin that you would like to set the sequence settings to.
2. Right click on that clip (or control click if you don't have a two button mouse)
3. Select >Make Muliticlip Sequence
4. A dialgue box will pop up, click OK
5 Now in your bin you should have a new sequence called "Multiclip Sequence 1", it will contain your clip with proper settings already set. You can rename the sequence whatever you'd like. You will also have a open folder titled "Muliticlip Sequence 1" with a copy of your clip. You can delete this folder. Your original clip should still be listed in your bin.

This is a quick work around to set sequence settings without the headache of trying to figure out what you set wrong manually.

Cheers,
Billy
