Why can't I "close gap"

I totally get that I can't use the "close gap" feature in the time line if there are clips in the way. But why is it that sometimes I want "close gap" between 2 clips or sequences when there are no clips overlapping or in between and it is grayed out some of the time?

I'm on FCP 7 but I had the same issue on 6.

Thanks

Update:

I just tried to do it where the first clip in the timeline had the audio and video ending on separate points (audio first, then video) and the feature was grayed out. I extended the audio clips to end at the same time as the video clips and then it worked. What's up with that?

I was able to do this without much of an issue. If you are right clicking, the track/position you click in will have an effect on whether or not a close gap will work. It would seem if you are going open a contextual menu on the timeline to do this, you need to click in the track that has the longest clip on the left side of your gap (for example, V1 is shorter than A1, and A1 is shorter than A2 = A2 is your longest track, so right click on the gap in that track)

Alternatively, just try to use ^G.

Close gap only works when there are gaps in all audio and video tracks. If one or the other is 'blocked' with clips, it won't work. Try the select all tracks tool as well- it's the one that looks like multiple arrows from the tool bar.

Thanks Noah. That's the weird part. The audio and video tracks are all clear. No clips in the way at all.

Perhaps a clip is linked or a track is locked. Who knows. It's just one of those things.

In FCP 6, I could even have Audio tracks locked, but use the "Close Gap" command on the video tracks above. Not in FCP 7. I've had similar experience to Jim Brennan above.

Anyone know?
