Why can't I add FX?

I put video on my timeline and changed the speed of my shots in the properties tab. Now, I'd like to add some FX to my shots. I drag the FX to the shot and nothing happens.

Why? Because I already slow-mo'd the shot? How do I make this work?

Also, is there a way to make a slo-mo'd shot stay the same length? Meaning, a 5 second shot played at half speed, I'd like it to be the same shot, but it would now be 10 seconds long. I want that 10 seconds, not 5.

Thanks!

Hey videomojo, instead of dragging the effect why don't you click on the "Event FX" symbol in the clip it self and add the effect via the "Plug-In Chooser" dialog box.

As far as changing the playback speed of the clip goes, try just holding down the CTRL key and draging (expanding or compressing) the end of the clip to the new length.

You definitely have the effects enabled within your preview window? It's easy to bypass everything for speed or simple forgetfulness!

Thanks...

I had the split screen punched on the preview window, so I couldn't see what the effect was doing. (another duh moment for me)

To make a clip longer, I usually just grab the edge of it and drag. How is that different from pressing the control key and dragging? Still looking for simplest way of changing the speed of the shot but keeping the entire shot.

Thanks again.

Simplest way is to change the playback rate in the media properties and then drag the clip out, like you're apparently doing.

Ctrl-dragging will change the rate of playback without going into the media properties or using a velocity envelope, and will keep the whole clip. But it's hard to get to a precise playback rate with it.
