Why calling it an Indie?

First, I wasn't sure if I'm in the good subject, but still, I got a question about Indie films and productions. What's that term? I mean why some people called their productions Indie? Is it because it got the style of Bollywood from India? I don't know. I wish I could get clear on this.

independant= It's produced by an independant producer. Not the big studios that usually produce films. Smaller films, usually driven by the artistic aspect than profit. My kind of films.
 
By meaning of producing, your making a budget for the Indie movie, low or no budget? Afterward, you make the distribution yourself, and it doesn't matter if you got no profit? Do you wish for your movies to have visibility, or it's really just artistic and you don't care about visibilty?
 
"Indie" means it is financed outside of the studio system, by an independent producer.

It doesn't really mean anything about budgets, although obviously studio films usually have larger budgets.
