Why are QT exports squashed?

Okay,

So when I export to QT mov, the files viewed in quicktime look squashed. That is they look wider than they should. I'm exporting 720 x 480 obviously, and I don't understand why when in FCP everything looks normal (4 x 3) but when exported it is stretched wider.

So if I want to export a still or mov from FCP I have to export it 640x480 to make it have the right proporitions.

What gives?

Re: Why are QT exports squashed?

quitime doesnt interpret the pixel aspect ratio which is .9 for 4:3 DV. so its playing 720x480 at a square pixel aspect which is .1 or 10% too wide. if your going to change it to a square pixel aspect for computer viewing only, it should be 648x480. i know that is not mathematically correct 4:3 but niether is DV 720x480 at .9 pixel aspect. .. but 648x480 is the correct square pixel dimension. simply multiply 720 x .9 to get the number in square pixels .. 648.

Thanks for your answer, Neil.

I guess this is why many of the screengrabs posted in the screenshots section tend to be squashed as well.
