Why are DVX cameras so ugly?

Ok, I read the Lecia thread and can understand....(I do like the look of Lecias...they remind me of a 60s Afla Romero Sports car)

Why are DVX so Ugly?

....i love my little guy but as the article in the American Cinematographer magazine (april 2003) said...it looks like a beer mug;
by the way, they loved the camera, especially the lens....they tested it next to a ARRI SR16 & an ARRICAM 35mm running some of the latest Kodak stock, vision2 5218 & 7218.

When I went from an ENG ( JVC GY DV500 ) to the DVX ...I must admit it looked like a consumer toy to me, but the output was better.

So how did these panasonic design folks turn out such a little ugly beer stein? ;)

Re: Why are DVX cameras so ugly?

I tend to waver between liking and hating the look. It's a great cam but I honestly can't decide if I like the form factor or not!

Function over form ;)

Re: Why are DVX cameras so ugly?

it aint pretty. i went from an xl1s to a dvx...there was something about having the xl1 on a shoot that made it feel like you were shooting a movie. but, the images from the dvx speak for them selves. now if they ever made the xl2 in black or dark grey, that thing would look killer...hate the white.

anyway, after shooting with the dvx for a bit....i have learned that its whats on the inside that counts. :D

Hey that's what all the girls that I dated in highschool said to me. I guess I'm like a DVX, whatever that means. :-[

Re: Why are DVX cameras so ugly?

Function over form...I'd agree, except for the terrible On/Off switch, the battery, and a few other consumer items that are difficult to accept when coming over from a robust camera design.

I think the SDX got the good ENG treatment, but it doesn't have the LCD & that's what I prefer to use, and the DVX price is much better. ;) ;) ;)

It's a great little camera...I'll probally end up keeping it even though it'll be outdated someday...then I can bash the lens out & use it for a beer mug....just kidding!

When My DVX finally dies, I'm goon gut it, seal it and drink pop from the little bugger ;D

Re: Why are DVX cameras so ugly?

It looks good with a chrosziel and some other goodies slapped on her ;)

Re: Why are DVX cameras so ugly?

I dunno....I think the DVX looks better than the XL1. That to me is a hideous looking camera. Like someone else stated, if the camera can do wonders than who cares what it looks like. I guess that is what the folks at Canon and Panasonic believe as well! LOL! They do need to fix the grip on our cameras though. They need to move the RECORD button to a new location. It is uncomfortable shooting from the grip positon. I now shoot with a DVRig Pro or shoot from the handle. I have no problems with the look of the DVX. Actually when I have my Matte Box on the front of it, it makes it look that much more like a film camera.

Re: Why are DVX cameras so ugly?

Mine is really pretty. Some nights, I pop opena bottle of wine, light some candles, and well...you can fill in the blanks. But it's magic.

Re: Why are DVX cameras so ugly?

I have wanted an xl1s for years, only having a consumer camera. I thought my new dvx 100a looked to consumerish also. Just got back from a Florida vacation which I shot some video on the beach of my daughter and her friend. Well, I was practing walking backwards and shooting them walking when we all noticed every one looking, trying to see who was in the video. Guess it looks better than I thought.

Re: Why are DVX cameras so ugly?

I can care less about the look of the DVX. I wouldn't care if it had poop stains on the side of it. It has nice quality and does whatever I want it to do except shoot 1080i. The day will come.

Re: Why are DVX cameras so ugly?

Having shot with a DSR-250 for a few years, I love how discrete the DVX design is. Having the ability to sneak around and shoot without a permit is totally cool.

OKay, resist the "guns and ducks" puns, please :D

Re: Why are DVX cameras so ugly?

I think it looks amazing. Way better than the XL1. For some reason it looks like it has a lot of power under it, like it's ready to jump out at you. With the matte box on it, it looks like a little 16mm cam.

*random note* Bluespider your avatar is driving me crazy... so hypnotic.................

Re: Why are DVX cameras so ugly?

I think the XL series looks nicer than the DVX. But when someone's looking at your finished project, they don't see the camera . . .

I started the thread on the Leica cams. I only said so because they look like something John F. Kennedy would have taken when vacationing in Malta in 1955.

This is 100% true IMHO

DVX footage looks ten times better - But these two units side by side and the XL2 looks pretty bloody impressive. But if the best footage came out of a camera that looked like a plywood box then it's still a better camera. A cool looking camera is meaningless and the attention the XL grabs out in public must be a pain in the ass.
