Why are Computer Monitors so Cheap Compared to 8inch LCD's for focusing?

I have always wondered why I can buy high def monitors like this:

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Dell/S2409W/

or similar 17-24 inch high def computer displays for 100-300 dollars while 8 inch LCD displays cost 900 dollars and have inaccurate color reproduction.

Why is this? Could one of these computer monitors be used feasibly? What inputs would I need to look for?

Thanks.

Well, to start with those monitors are often HDMI or DVI only, which isn't suitable for most cameras. You want Component or HDSDI. Second is that they need to be plugged into AC power so if you're out on the field then you're screwed. Lastly, they're big and heavy and are a pain to carry around vs. smaller field monitors.

None of the flat screens represent acurate color or luminance, no mater how much you spend. Period.
That´s what your graphs and Zebra are for.

For focusing I got a 24 inch Full-HD Gateway with component in, that works great for that prupose. If you once got used to the luxury of a 1:1 HD monitor you don´t look back.

For the verry view cases I can´t use AC power or the 24" is too big (Steadycam) I have a SONY DVP-XF870 DVD Player with composit in and reversible display that is - at least - par with the most pro field monitors and runs for over 6 hrs of the included battery.

Why are smaller high definition screens more expensive?

Supply and demand

larger screens are wanted by the world as a whole...we see them so often that they've become part of the furniture...that is we just don't notice them.

If everyone started demanding smaller screens for their computers we'd(the people who truly want them) all have an abundance of options. This isn't going to happen.

What will happen is that as technology starts to invade more sections of our lives and displays are needed that are small, like say in cars, boats, airplanes, on your fridge, or on a phone...wherever, then the options will increase...so we just have to pay the price, and wait for the tech. to trickle down to us.

Hey Postmaster,

so you can just go video out directly to the SONY DVP-XF870 DVD Player or do you need a converter?

Thanks,

Jimmy

Out of the HVX, straight into the Sony, no convertres - composit only, wish it would be component thou....

....but I can´t complain for that money and the quality is great.

yeah, I always wish I can just buy those small Acser laptop with 8.9" screen and just use it for focusing!
