Why am I so obsessed with directing?

Why am I so obsessed with directing? I’m in my fifth year now, six before that acting. As soon as I latched onto directing it started to consume my life. I can’t watch anything without thinking where the line is, or admiring that long handheld sequence, (must have been hard to block), no he cut too soon to the close-up and when I’m not critiquing others work I’m bashing my head against the wall chanting:- Magic Bullet, aspect ratios, too much gain, inserts, not enough gain, subtext, cutaways, title manager no Photoshop, Actors, room tone, tungsten, f5, input one on, no f6, focal length, crushing my blacks, DP's, defusing my whites, crossing the line (only if physically), bubbling, billying, dollying, trollying and I really should get that mini jib!
Obviously no-one knows how bad I really am, anyone else got a problem??

Hey,

Here is my two cents on this. I don't think I am obsessed with directing but my one true love is storytelling. Seeing the final end product. I get excited when actors take an interest in my work.

It is very flattering and nice all at the same time.

Aesthetic choice, directing it's all the same to me. You see I've also edit my own stuff, which I see as another extension of my directing. Of course it's all semantics. Loki try not to be soo hot-headed my original message was an innocent one. To be honest I'm getting pretty sick of everyone bashing anything that's being said around here. We all share the same passion to be creative. I don't want to be defending a message I wrote months ago. I've paid my dues in this industry, you can tell that by looking at my reel. Let’s have a bit of respect for one another, like I said my original message was pure innocent excitement something this board seems to be crushing recently. Yeah I know it’s an industry built on rejection, blah, blah, blah. We are all on the same journey, it’s longer than I ever imagined and my feet hurt.
One love chaps, one love.

JP, you are definitely not alone. :) Most of my family and friends wont even go to the movies with me anymore. :)

I love storytelling as well. While writting my latest script I couldnt help but feel enormous joy of the procedure. I was writting and at the same time making all the pictures in my head, making adjustments, setting up the locations, all in my head. I love writting down the shots and how I picture the camera movement, the angles etc.
As for the actual directing, it only brings me satisfaction when I start editing and realise if things went well while shooting or not. Sometimes I find myself with footage so well shot that I realise how well I did it and also how little I knew at the moment of shooting but left it all to my instinct. I believe I have a good eye for this but havent been able to make the transition from pictures in my head to the on-screen footage.
Hope it wont take long.

wordplay is tricky at times.

but yes, my original posting was simply just meant as an off the top of my head comment. Not a jab at the OP.

peas.

I've always done my own cinematography, editing, etc because I feel they're all extensions of directing. I'm obsessed int he same way the original poster is. I don't know how I feel about it. I think if you're driven to be a filmmaker, and you really, really want it like I do, it's important to be obsessed for a while. It's not a bad thing to watch a film and anylize how they do things, it's more education.

I finally found a place where people understand my lifestyle.
