It's trying to convert DV pixel shapes into computer pixel shapes. Computers use square pixels, DV doesn't.
If you want your saved pictures to be 720x480, go into the options and find "simulate device aspect ratio" and turn that off. That should get you the full resolution, but just recognize that things will look a little bit stretched out on your computer monitor.
My project is set to 720x480. But when i created a 2:35:1 mask in photoshop at 720x480, and applied it in my vegas time line, the black bars where not all the way to the top and bottom of the clip. It left open spots at the edge of the clip.
I found the "simulate device aspect ratio" by right clicking the preview window. It's always been off. When i turn it on, the picture gets squished a bit.
Again, aspect ratio. Go to the media pool and right-click on your photoshop clip, and look for media properties, and then look at the aspect ratio. You'll see that the photoshop clip has an aspect ratio of 1.000 (which means 1x1, or "square" pixels). That's fine for computers, but not for video. For using it in a DV video project, you'll want to change the aspect ratio to NTSC DV (.9091). That'll have it fill the full DV frame.
Have you considered using the Pan/Crop for your 2:35 mask? Select Pan/Crop and use
720 X 306. This gives you the option for moving the mask up and down to correct framing and comps.
Barry, that worked perfictly. John, i use the pan/crop function very often, but why 720X306? I did a search on this subject and a while back you supplied a guy with a 2:35:1 mask and that is what i used. I did the 720x306 in the pan/crop function and the black bars are not as thick as the mask you supplied. Are they supposed to be the same size? Also, i noticed that when i use the pan/crop function, the edge of the bars are slightly blured and the one i used from you is very solid. when viewed on a TV the pan crop bars have a slight flickering effect to them which is very distracting, yours has no such effect. hasn't anyone else noticed this, or am i doing somthing wrong?
Has anyone had the same flickering effect on the edge of the black bars when viewing on a TV? This is after burning to DVD. Why is the edge of the Pan/Crop preset softer than on what was done in Photoshop?
