Who's Who in films

Re: Who's Who in films

I was unaware that there was a difference. What I might suggest the difference is, is that a production company is simply the organization that got the movie physically made, whereas the film company is the tag that the director or whoever had the creative vision of the movie added to the fanfare of it.

For example, Steven Spielburg had Ambin Entertainment, which I believe was a film company. Then he made dreamworks, which is a production company... see how that works?

The way I differentiate the two is kind of like Thinspirit, however, I do not consider Dreamworks to be a production company...I consider it to be more of a studio.

In Hollywood I feel there are three common entities that often go into the production of a film: the "film company" (I'd rather refer to it as the producer), the Studio and the Production Company.

I do not work on features, I work in TV commercials...so I cannot give a definitive answer on this. However, the process was described to me by John H. Williams, the producer of "Shrek", a few years ago. He owns a "film company" called Vanguard Films (http://www.vanguardfilms.com). He discovered the book for "Shrek", developed the concept, hired a writer and then took it to Dreamworks. Once he sold the studio on it, they came up with the money and hired a production company (which was in this case an animation studio: PDI) to actually hire the crew and manage all the logistics of production.

Also, for more info on this topic, check out the book "Hello, He Lied" by Lynda Obst (a great producer by the way). This book describes the Hollywood process very well...and the documentary as well. The doc features John H. Williams and further describes the path "Shrek" took. I highly recommend this book and film!

Re: Who's Who in films

Well technically those so called "studios" aren't really studios at all... they're organizations with money that make money by funding movies. They haven't really been studios since 1952 or so when television began to hit it big...
