I have lots of practical questions about the Osmo. Some are hard to type.
So I was wondering if there's someone in Los Angeles with one... I'd love to buy him/her coffee in exchange of 20 minutes of playing with the Osmo at a starbucks or similar.
Bad timing Macgregor, I sold mine yesterday and delivered it to the friend who bought it to give her a lesson in the finer points of it. Handy tool. Kind of a PITA to rig up. I would have been happy to meet with you to let you try it. You will want the Z Axis Arm for sure, gets rid of the bobbing movement when walking. The DJI app is a little tempermental and tying up your phone during shooting can be a PITA if you are using it to get information about the shoot or texting. I would buy a second cheap phone and dedicate it to the Osmo. Image quality is about like a nicer Go Pro, not good enough for many shoots on your level but good enough for well lit exteriors. I used it for shots that made the cut for LA Metro, used it quite a bit when i was in the Sahara in May shooting BTS for a big Fox show, the shots I got with it couldn't have been shot with our A camera at all so they will make the cut.
I had to sell it because by the time I bought four extra batteries, Z Axis, extra charger, all the little bits and bobs to make it work too, I spent about $1,100.00. I sold it and bought Zhiyun Crane instead, I can mount a mirrorless like the Fuji XT2 which is much higher quality and flexibility than the Osmo. Sure, more money but better images. The Osmo can be excellent for car shooting though, it will get you shots that you never could have gotten before without spending a lot of money, gear and rigging time. They just came out with that 6' extension cable thing that would let you mount the Osmo on the car and easily controll it from the passnger seat for killer pans and tilts while driving. Ironically, I am shooting a sizzle for a car-based show that if we ever sold it, I would probably buy another Osmo just for doing car shots like this, but who knows if we have a chance of selling the show?
In summary, good tool, finicky app, limited usefulness, low light sucks, audio used to suck but they improved the firmware so the fan shuts off now when you record and they sent out a little extra mic that isn't bad for sync/scratch audio. PM with any more detailed questions you may have.
