Whoops-one camera 16:9 the other 4:3

The kids were fiddling with a two cam music band shoot and one camera was set to 4:3 and the other 16:9. Both tapes are now captured in PP1.5. They know they can scale up and down in Premiere. Which is the preferred method? To scale the 16:9 to 4:3 or the 4:3 to 16:9???

Is there an alternative method to match the cameras?

They now know to synch and double check the cameras but they still need to make this project work.

Any advice woiuld be greatly appreciated.

The cams were both Panasonic DVC30.

Its not simply an issue of scalling one format for the other. If you scale the 16x9 to 4x3 you'll squeeze the image and everyone will appear taller and thinner. If you scale the 4x3 for 16x9 everything will become shorter and fatter.

What you should do is pan & scan the 16x9 into a 4x3 window. I'm not sure if this will work in PPro 1.5 but you'll get the idea.

Open a new 720x486 (NTSC) project and import all of your clips placing the 16x9 and 4x3 clips in seperate folders. edit the project and when you have everything where you want it, scale the 61x9 clips to get rid of the letterbox and animate the motion, panning left to right to compose the appropriate shot. You end up loosing 20% of the information on the sides.

Good luck

So you've got one full screen 4:3, and one letterboxed (as opposed to full aspect) 16:9? You could simply add a matte to the 4:3 footage. Or even easier, make a title that consists of two black boxes- the exact same size as the "letterboxing" in the 16:9 footage. Then put that title on the top layer in your timeline and stretch it over everything.

The "kids" eh? Yeah right. ;)
