And I was on a 1WD vehicle... but it was in August, I saw very little ice, and there weren't many roads at all, it was a mostly off-road adventure. It was gorgeous and quite fun, right up until it all went straight to hell. :) But yeah, Montana was epic. It was pretty much all epic, I fell in love with northern New Mexico, all of Colorado was glorious, and the only somewhat disappointing region was southern Wyoming; once I hit the Tetons it was magnificent from there on.

Thanks. It's coming along. Bones are healed, I'm just plagued with perpetual chronic pain that keeps me from doing pretty much anything, so ... looking into surgical repair to sort it out.

Seems like a lot of incidents occur either at the start or close to the end of a trip .... imagine that on another day you would have successfully made the descent. Big bikes can be a bit overwhelming when physics is against you ... guess that is why most enduro ... dirt bikes are 400cc or less.

I have a good friend who was ... now retired .... as most of my colleagues are at this point ... a great neurosurgeon. His comment ... which he oft repeated ... was that surgery does not take pain away ... just changes the nature of it. Unstable bones need repair .... as do fragments that are impinging on the spinal cord. However most bone pain from fractured vertebral bodies can take up to a couple of years to abate .... not good news. Vertebral cage implants are fairly new and the long term outcomes are unknown ....

If there is a great pain clinic near you ... physiotherapy, epidural injections and TENS may afford some relief. Implantable stimulators can work but carry great risk of movement, dislodging and infection so they should be a last resort.

The real difficulty is that the spine is involved in any movement and support without movement so that it is constantly stressed; makes it hard to find a comfortable position for any length of time.

Hope you find relief ... pain added to the stresses of the past 12 months would be tough.

Rocket III looks awesome ...

How much does the moderator position pay? I should note that I go by day rates (up to 10 hours) so if I only put in a minute of moderating work in a day I would still be charging for a full day of work. I also don't work for labor only so you'll be getting a lot of nice video equipment to go with the moderating.

I nominate Dan(Puredrifting).
Seconded.

I hope the pain drops, the cheerfulness returns and the chilled out attitude comes back - I feel for you! Good wishes from the UK

hit a tree, shattered one vertebrae and broke two others and a rib, collapsed both lungs.

So sorry Barry, can't even imagine how painful and scary that must have been out there. Glad you are alive and thankful for the amazing people who work these rescue units. Hoping for a full recovery and resolve of the chronic pain.

Sorry to hear about your troubles Barry. Spent a lot of time in New Mexico and Bozeman in the 90s, absolutely magical. If your misadventures usually occurs that the start and end of trips, maybe start a few days later and end a few days early. Same logic I apply to dating, bowling and fisticuffs. Also I’ve always enjoyed the vibe on dvxuser, it’s been a nice respite from craziness online.

I took on the Continental Divide Trail, and it won. It's a largely offroad adventure trail that follows the mountain divide between the west and the east, border to border from Mexico up to Canada.

Barry have you (and filmguy) seen Long Way Round, where Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman ride around the world west to east, London to New York?

A biker's wet dream (I used to ride), shot pre-GoPro (early mini-DV I believe), which makes it that much more impressive. Yeah, they had support, but you wouldn't believe some of the places they rode! Un F-ing Believable!!!

Followed by Long Way Down...

We now return you to the previously scheduled Who Wants To Be A Mod (and Barry's recovery)....

And a Long Way Up now.....done on electric Harleys!

Barry,

One of the great attributes of a moderator is respect from the community for the knowledge, experience and commitment
of the individual in that position. Your position and measured moderation is a model for whomever would assume your
place.

Me ... little known ... conservative older privileged Statler and Waldorf stand in ... hell I would have banned myself years ago ... cannot
tell of the number of posts I have deleted prior to posting ....

All of the recommendations to this point sound good ... but the new new guy will struggle to fill your position.

Stay strong ... hope springs eternal ... and only the strong prevail ... more an issue of temperament and character ...

The previous line is not a line of platitudes but perhaps an invariable reflection on our temporal condition ....

Yes! And been watching Long Way Up on AppleTV more recently. Captures the spirit of adventure well, and inspired a handful of my own past moto road trips:

PCH from Olympic National Park down to almost LA, and back up through Yosemite/Lake Tahoe/Crater Lake - incredible. Camped the whole way without reservations, just rolled in and found new strangers to hang out with each night, some I still keep in contact with.

Scottish Highlands, all around - the roads weren't as conducive to the thrill of cornering, but the scenery was second to none. Dramatic dynamic weather changes, small pubs, whiskey, haggis, castles, Distillery tours, scottish highland games, fish and chips, that scene from Skyfall, etc. All on two wheels. One for the books, for sure.

Central + Eastern Oregon, zig-zagging everywhere - it rivaled Scotland in scenery. Painted Hills, Rattlesnake Grade, Joseph OR, gold towns, hot springs, breweries and small town desert vibes, etc. By far the best in terms of roads/cornering - the pavement is near perfect, roads are empty, and they twist everywhere.

I've been getting my fix on the Long Way series until I can travel again. I'd love to take a trip through Canada - Whistler, Banff, Jasper, and back down to the States through Montana and glacier national park - that might be next on the bucket list. If the wife allows it. Or maybe I've had my memories and such risk taking is a thing best left to telling grandkids someday.

Not an easy job, and few have added more to the community. If you really want to be a mod, you don't want to be the replacement to Barry, that's an impossible act to follow. You want to be the replacement to Barry's replacement :D
