Who want to Hack their G5?

I've heard that if you run FCP Studio 3 via "Pacifist", skipping the install, you can run it on a G5. Is anyone willing to test this and see. You will need a 2gig machine though. These screenshots aren't mine, but are said to be of a G5 running FCP7 under "Pacifist". I know hardcores will tell me it can't or shouldn't be done and the world will implode if it's done, but I've heard this before. What do you think?

True. I have a Quad G5 with a Kona 3 card in it, and it has been very good to me. However, the truth of the matter is that the PPC platforms are just about EOL. I just built a Core i7 930 dual boot / dual OS box running SL on the MAC side and Windows 7 Pro on the other side. It is OC'd to 3.85GHz-w-12 gigs of ram and has 8 cores. It just leaves my poor old Quad G5 in the dust. I will probably move the Kona Card to the new box, since with the new drivers it can be used in both MAC and Windows systems. However, at the end of the day, there is nothing wrong with the G5. They are real work-horses.

Hmm

Hmm

Yeah I ditched my G5 years ago, it's way too old and slow for serious editing honestly. Especially the 2005 model I had, 8 gigs of DDR1 RAM, haha, just a slow machine honestly couldn't imagine still using that.

I just ordered a new Macbook Pro, I'm so stoked, absolute top of the line, the Ferrari of laptops. 2.66 Ghz Core i7, 8 gigs of DDR3 1066 RAM, 17" display, and a 512 gig solid state drive, my favorite feature! haha. My old laptop that I'm using right now is falling apart, the battery is terrible, the computer was in a backpack and fell off a chair but that managed to cause some case distortion or something and some odd hardware glitches, and it just runs slow anymore. It's time is done.

New model arriving in a week.

I'm at the point of choosing between a G5 running FCP or an Intel Mac Mini. I'll be running Photoshop, FCP 6 and After Effects mainly. My producer has a 1.8 G5 and edits footage from his DP's Panasonic HCM150 on it via the Toast 10 (or 9?) workflow. He converts on his the Black Macbook 2.0 and edits with the G5. He does all his stuff with it. It's a Quad if I remember correctly with a lot of ram and two or three drives. Honestly I'd rather deal with a G5 for awhile. By the time I upgrade a ton of new stuff will be out. I'm probably going for the 2.0 dual. For now. Money's tight and the Mac Mini lacks an upgrade path. If I had the money I might buy a new one, but if I had the money I'd buy an new Intel Mac. LOL.
