Who needs a CANOPUS STORM / EDIUS? - ultranoob question of the day.

Hi everyone, now I won't pretend I'm not new to this - I've read through the sales pitch and reviews, but there is one question I can't seem to answer:

Un the normal run of filming and then digitizing and then outputting, do these cards provide any quality advantages? I get the feeling they're really meant for braodcast suites, but if someone could really spell out what they're good for, I would really appreciatte it - and post a new Dundee photo of course!
 
Often times, all you get out of these cards, is the ability to preview effects without having to render the clip. That saves you several minutes up front, and each time you make a change. And time is money.

I use an old storm2 card to edit hd projects. I use it so I can watch my work on an NTSC monitor using its s-video out and also to monitor stereo audio on TV type speakers. Im using HQ codec on the edius timeline. The CPU is doin the work of course but the card does help in giving you real time feedback and yes, as Capt Quirk said, time is money.

Thanks guys - just one question coming from the last answer, which is you mention the Edius 'timeline' - I'm guessing that means these cards come with editing software of their own? Can you use the card with, in my case, Premier 2.0 or do you have to use the packaged software . . . and is it good?

When i got my storm card, it only came with its old editor NOT edius and an older premier NOT 2.0. However canopus provided support until prem 1.51. Edius would still work with AE 5.x but you can copy-paste its installed plugin to the plugin folder of AE 6.5 and your good to go.
With Edius 4.1 I think IMHO that you would have the basic necessities to finish your project. Just do your sweetening for video(comps etc) in another app like AE for instance and audio enhancement in another, in my case sound forge.

There is no way you could be editing hd projects with a storm2 card . The only Canopus card that you can edit hd is th NX card.
 
I do.
I use the storm to check color on an NTSC monitor.
After everything is ok I then use a feature on edius that premier 2.0 doesnt have. And THAT is change project settings from SD to HD for as long as its the same frame rate.
then render to hd.

Saves me money.

using storm for HD projects in after effects too.

With the storm video out and using the old plug in for AE I can monitor my comps on an SD NTSC monitor. HOW?
in your comp window change to HALF resolution to view the whole letterboxed frame. When you render, just make sure the setting is FULL res.
