Who got distribution deal on Sundance...

I got the info that on this year Sundance there were 200 movies screened and 30 of them already got distribution deal.

Do you guys know who are those guys?

One more stuff, is it true that even if you have a great movie on a vhs you sent to SUndance Film Fest - you may not be selected just because nobody will watch your tape? Friend of mine told me that most of the films accepted to Sundance (and other bigger fest) are actually selected long before indie filmmakers start sending their movies ....

Just curious...

Re: Who got distribution deal on Sundance...

I know "Hustle and Flow" got picked up by MTV/Paramount as part of a three picture deal for 16 million. It was shot in Memphis and directed by a Memphian (Craig Brewer). John Singleton produced.

Re: Who got distribution deal on Sundance...

dont anyone shot a movie on digital? sundance doesnt accept digital?

HD SONY CAMERA is digital but I mean "dv format"?

Re: Who got distribution deal on Sundance...

there are films in Sundance that were shot with the DVX I believe

Re: Who got distribution deal on Sundance...

you can shoot on whatever you want, but I don't believe they show anything but film prints (I could be wrong on that though)

Re: Who got distribution deal on Sundance...

"Lonely Jim" was actually shot on DV. It directed by Steven Bessumi (sp) and he also stars in it with Liv Tyler. I think it's produced by Indegent (who only do DV films). It's actually getting a good buzz.

Re: Who got distribution deal on Sundance...

I read on the Sundance website that soon they'll only be accepting all formats on DVD.

Re: Who got distribution deal on Sundance...

Maybe for screening purposes, but I highly doubt that standard definition DVDs would be preferred to 35mm prints :-/

I'd hope not at least...

Re: Who got distribution deal on Sundance...

I imagine the DVD format was spec'd for initial submission.

Films that were selected for exhibition were required to be submitted in either 35mm or HDCAM, as Mike noted. The DV film I shot was bumped up to HDCAM for its screening at Sundance.

Re: Who got distribution deal on Sundance...

Charles, if you don't mind my asking, what was the cost to do that?

Re: Who got distribution deal on Sundance...

If I remember correctly, the post house that did the transfer (Fotokem) had a discount as they are affiliated with Sundance, but it was still something like $135 for a 14 minute short.

Re: Who got distribution deal on Sundance...

I wonder how much is it for mini DV to film would be?

so basically just anybody can submit stuff to sundance?

that's cool

Re: Who got distribution deal on Sundance...

Yeah, but getting in is another story...

And Charles is definitely not "just anybody"....

Re: Who got distribution deal on Sundance...

Here in Spain if you make a film in DV and is good enough, it wont take lot of time to find distributor or coproducer who will pay for the 35mm copy, so... if you go Sundance with 35mm, probably you found this guy who will be willing to pay before the festival and be able to show your masterpiece. IMO of course.

Re: Who got distribution deal on Sundance...

Of course Sundance is pre-decided...do you actually think that they'd gamble MILLIONS on waiting for us, the great unwashed/un-connected to come through with films?

This was shot using 3 DVXs. It was actually pretty well done for a slamdance documentary.

Re: Who got distribution deal on Sundance...

Sundance accepts DV films, but only projects 35mm.
Except for the online film festival and in their new small theater that shows online work.
