White Balence

So I use a Sony DSR PD-170 and i always use the manual settings. Whenever i go to adjust the white balance under flourescent lights it looks normal when I record, but when I playback, the white balance slowly fades back and fourth from a bluish to an orangeish color. Why is it doing this?

The fluo bulbs change color temp naturally. It's just the strobing you always hear about in Fluo bulbs. Usually older bulbs, or bulbs with poor ballasts change color temp more noticably than newer, electronic ballasted fluos do.

Did you have the shutter on? If you set the shutter on above 1/60 (because the lights cycle at 60hz) it'll cycle the color temp from warm to cold. If you shoot without the shutter on, you shouldn't notice the changes in the color temp of the flo's too much. Hope that helps.

ME Too What can you do?

What about future shoots in the same situation?

What NLE do you use? It may be possible to keyframe a color correction effect to counter balance the changing color temperature. Definitely a fair amount of work, but if it's that important it may help.

I had the same damn thing happen to me last week. Sucks - I'm editing it right now and it looks like ****. At first I thought I inadvertanly used AWT until I realized it was the flo's. I also adjusted the shutter to account for a computer screen in the shot which made matters worse. Lesson learned!
