Did anyone think about something like an 8 foot focus whip ?
Seems to be the cheapest solution for pulling remote focus on a jib. I think about steel cables like the ones used for pulling brakes or changing gears on a bike.
No. It needs to be a LANC style control. First off, you want to minimize your mechanical connection to the camera end of the jib. Jibs don't use dampening - they use rigid construction and inertia to keep the shot from breathing prior to or upon completion of a move. Introducing what is effetively as a stick at the end of the jib will always induce some unwanted wander.
The focus-by-wire (bike component) concept isn't terrible, but even the best airplane cable won't give you the accuracy you'll need for critcal focus work.
There is a reason Hollywood uses wireless FF when controlling from behind the fulcrum.
