sorry i'm ver new in DV category, i'm willing to buy a dvx100a and want to konw what is the difference between Panasonic wide angle lens adaptor .8x yields 26mm and Professional Titanium Wide Angle lens? Both of them list as DVX100A accessories in Willoughbys.com. besides, if i buy any wide angle lens, is there any addtional stuff i need to have it first in order to get the lens work propertly? thanks

Re: which wide angle lens?

first off, the safest place to buy a dvx-100a is either evsonline.com (call them and aks for Rush, he cuts deals for users on here) or b&h

second, get the camera, use it, and then do the research on lenses.

you might not need the lens or you might want the wideangle and get the anamorphic panasonic lens instead.

Thanks Matthew!

Hi Joel, if you shoot me an email, I will be happy to give you the DVXuser discount on a DVX100A. I will be outta the office T, W, Th for a shoot, but I will respond on Fr. The 0.8 Pana wide angle is really not much wider than the DVX, only 20% wider. 0.7 is where you start to see it, and 0.6 is pretty good. I don't know much about the titanium lenses, seems like generic stuff, no brand name. The anamorphic lens allows you to shoot in optically squeezed 16:9, so it lets you 40% more, but only to the sides. THe DVX is already pretty wide, you may want to buy and experiment first, then decide what lens you need. ;D

The main difference is that the Panasonic wide-angle yields a nice sharp picture, whereas the "professional titanium" is reputed to be a horrifying piece of overpriced crap.  Search for "Digital Optics", "Crystal Optics" or "Crystal Vision" and you'll find out what that "titanium" lens is.  Jarred bought the telephoto version of it to test for us, and after one glance through the viewfinder he pried it off his camera and threw it away.

Re: which wide angle lens?

Are there other options to the Century Optics .6 Wide that are of good quality?

Since I didn't win it I guess I gotta buy it. :)

I like the zoom-through capability of the .7, but the cost is so much more. Does anyone make a .6 zoom-through?

Re: which wide angle lens?

By the time you get to the point where the zoom goes kablooey, you're pretty much at the point where the coverage angle is obtainable with the bare naked lens.

Unless, of course, you're actually zooming instead of dollying. Which you should only be doing in rare cases.

Re: which wide angle lens?

Ahhh... good to know!

So... if I understand this correctly:

The .6 Wide Angle lens allows you to remain zoomed from 51 to 99 yet still get a reasonably wide field of view. This helps to film in tight spaces and still get a shallower depth of field or "extreme-nose-close-up" shots.

Am I understanding this correctly? Does anyone have samples of shots at various zooms with & without the CO .6 WA lens?

Um...the zoom will work from 0 to 70-something, then the focus just goes all whacky.

I'll see if I can do some grabs for you tonight. Depends on how much my sweetie wants to talk. :)

Re: which wide angle lens?

Thank you, Dan! Thank your sweetie for letting you do that! :)

Given that it goes from 0 to 70 I'm confused on its purpose again. Any illustration would be very handy. Thank you! (Or should I say "Vielen Dank!")

Re: which wide angle lens?

The .6 gives you a much wider field of view. But it has limited zoom capability -- I believe it only goes up to about Z60 before it cannot focus anymore.

The stock DVX lens, at Z00, is 4.5mm. When you put the .6 wide-angle converter on, then at Z00 you have about a 2.7mm lens.

Re: which wide angle lens?

Thanks, Barry... but alas I am still too green (no pun intended!) to really understand what the focal length will do visually to shot composition. What I'm really trying to wrap my head around is "why is this worth $300?"

What will this allow me to do that I can't do... that I want to do? :)

All advice welcome!!

Re: which wide angle lens?

Okay, starting to make sense.

I see little difference between the .6 and the .7 at full wide? Is that the right pic?

Okay, so for full wide you are getting (duh) simply a wider angle of view. Useful for establishing shots and other long shots. Yes?

Next question would be what does this do for you at the full zoom that it'll allow? Does it let you view more when you're forced to be close to your subject but still want a narrow depth of field?

Starting to understand, thanks for all your help and patience!

Re: which wide angle lens?

It is solely for getting a wider shot. Using it in a zoomed-in circumstance will do nothing for you, DOF-wise, that couldn't be accomplished just by taking the wide-angle adapter off and using the native DVX lens.

Let's put it a different way -- the wide-angle lens just lets you zoom out *more* than if you didn't have it. That's all it does.

Re: which wide angle lens?

OK. Here is a comparison:

http://www.genjerdan.com/private/WA/WA-Norm.html

From Z00 to Z81

The top half of each pic is the normal lens, the bottom is the Century Optics .6 adapter

Right around Z45/Z50 the normal lens starts seeing what the WA sees at around 80.

Or maybe I should put it the other way...The WA at Z30 has the same-ish coverage as the normal at Z00.

Oh...and sorry for the fish-eyeness of it. I was only 6 feet away from the bookshelves. At longer distances, the effect is much less. (If you saw my December Contest entry, the whole thing was shot with the .6. Not much room to work with in a bedroom, which is why I bought it in the first place.)

Re: which wide angle lens?

Okay, I am now educated.

Thank you both again for your time and information. I think I misunderstood what the lens can do, but now more fully appreciate where it could be very useful!

Thanks again!!

Re: which wide angle lens?

Does anyone know how much more distortion you get with the ultra fish-eye adapter compared to Century Optics regular one. Was the fisheye adapter in the earlier post the regular or ultra?

Re: which wide angle lens?

So in the end you all were recommending the .6 over the .7? I also would like full zoom through, but a good wide shot would definitely be useful thus is the .6 that much wider?

Re: which wide angle lens?

Hi everyone,
Good info up to this point. I've had the Panny .8x for a while & wanted to go wider. Has anyone tested or have an opinion on the sharpness/quality differance between the look of the Panny .8 vs. Century .6 ? I know Century stuff is nice, but ?????? :-)

Thanks in Advance,

Steve
