Which way to go?

Got an offer for unused secondhand Edirol r-44 for $350, or should i go for a new Tascam 680? Recorder will be used for interviews.

Now that's a tough one. That price is very good for the R-44.

Will you be using a mixer in front of the recorder and if so, does the mixer support channel outputs?

If you're not using a mixer, the one big advantage the R-44 has over the tascam is gain control knobs for each channel, where on the tascam you have to push the button for the channel, and then grab the single knob to adjust gain. While not a problem for the tascam if you're using a mixer in front of the recorder and typically would calibrate the recorder gain to the mixer, and then use the mixer to adjust levels.

While the tascam offers 2 additional analog input channels, plus a two track mixdown section. A mixer with iso outs + the R-44 I think will make a more rebust location sound -68recorder rig than the DR-680 alone. I own a 680 which I feed from a PSC Alphamix and love the rig, but I don't know if I'd want to hit the field with just the 680 alone.

That's an awesome price for an unused R-44! Do you have the need for the DR-680? In my mind the DR-680 is for people who need to record six isolated microphone tracks in the field on the cheap. Unless you have the need to record more than four isolated tracks, I would go with the R-44.

Yea for that price I would snag the R-44 up.
Give it a try see how you like it, I don't think you'd have any issue selling it down the road for at least the same amount you bought it for.
