Which Video Card and Sound Card

I did a search, and even threw this question into one of my earlier posts, but only got one response towards it, so I'm throwing it out there again...

What video and sound cards are you guys using out there? I'm not even sure what part the video card plays in rendering or editing, but I know a good audio card is important.

I want to get top notch stuff, so your help is very appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Which Video Card and Sound Card

Well, I currently have a Matrox G400 (I think) which is a good solid 2D card. It's archaic now, but it puts out a high quality signal to multiple monitors. Matrox has always excelled with cards for 2D work. However, I'm completely rebuilding my systems and am looking at OpenGL accelerated cards with DVI ouput like the Matrox Parhelia. My audio card is an M-Audio Delta 1010LT. I'm very happy with the quality and the flexibility. The good part is the performance and low price, the not-so-good part is the inconvenience of no breakout box.

Re: Which Video Card and Sound Card

Hey Barry... What does a breakout box do? Is the M-Audio Delta 1010LT way better than the top of the line SoundBlaster? As far as video cards go, it sounds like Matrox is a good choice then... I'll look into that Parhelia. What does an OpenGL accelerated card do? Last question: How much of a role does the video card play in editing? Thanks Barry!!

Re: Which Video Card and Sound Card

The Parhelia is only really useful if you've got an open GL application like 3DS Max or Boris Red GL--otherwise, you're paying a lot of money for a feature you won't use. A lower priced Matrox card should be fine for most NLE work. A breakout box is just a nice box for all your input and output connections (XLR, RCA, MIDI, etc.). The 1010LT has bundles of cables that come directly off the card, so it's not as convenient. The 1010LT is capable of more functions than the SoundBlaster--like powered XLR inputs, and is also better at producing clean input and output.

Re: Which Video Card and Sound Card

..well my opinion differs on the parhelia. i have it, and wouldnt trade it for the world. just the simple feature of running 3 monitors , or 2 monitors and an ntsc out at once is worth it. screen real estate is priceless imho. it just saves so much time.

..combined with the rtx100, ive got 3 monitors + the ntsc monitor.

Re: Which Video Card and Sound Card

True, I forgot about the 3 monitor option--that is a great feature. I'm thinking about a Parhelia and the Apple 23" Cinema display, but haven't sorted out the screen resolution issues. The Parhelia has NTSC out? That's another great feature. Neil--are you using and Open GL apps? I'm wondering about the OpenGL acceleration performance of the Parhelia. Do you have the 128 or 256 meg version?
