Hey there, i was wondering what tapes you lot use with the dvx, obviously i should make my mind up now so i dont mix brands, --panasonic or sony. im mainly wondering about the price difference because if there the same but i have to pay more for one brand then i may aswel get the cheaper ones and save cash in the longterm.

thanks, sorry for the noob question, i just need to keep 1 brand, the camera comes with a panasonic tape. can u reply as soon as possible as i want to order tapes tonight so they arrive same day as my dvx.

This is my favorite topic. We get to talk about it so much.

The question isnt noob, it's the fact that you didnt search the forums.

Upper right corner of Hardware forum....... "Search this Forum".

You bought a Panny cam, just get the Panny tapes. I'm sure the Sonys are good, but I would think Panny would make a tape/lube system that is best for the cam. Go with the MQ. They'll last longer (if you reuse, and I dont recommend reuse for production/important footage) and have fewer dropouts.

Hey,

Without question use Panasonic "Professional" series 63 minute tapes. Also don't mix tape brands. This can cause 'drop outs' due to the different lubricants that can accumulate on the heads.

Peace,

Chris

Yeah, don't get too hard on him for asking a familiar question. It doesn't hurt to help reinfoce the opinion, plus you have new people on here all the time that may have an alternate opinion on the subject.

Thanks for posting the question, it helps me out as well!

thanks for the reply, just good to know your opinions, ill get sum pannys. ill post up some footage in a couple of days, oh and do the crgd-28 batteries work with dvx100

I talked to some tech people at the local Panasonic dealer the other day and they recommended Maxell tapes. According to them, those are just rebranded Pannys, and they are almost 1 euro cheaper than Panasonic tapes. I've been using those from the start with my DVXB and no problems so far. Everyone agrees to avoid Sony tapes though, as they use some kind of lubricant that greases up the heads.

Whatever batteries you bought, you should send them back for a refund and buy the $79.00 batteries sold through a distributor on these forumns. They last a LONG time and are very high quality.

I know you all think I'm crazy here, but from the day I got my DVX I used Sony Excellence so that in a pinch I could have someone run out and get extras without having to switch brands.
I wanted to do Panasonic but I can't afford to ever run out on a shoot and then not have the Panasonic since you can't just buy them anywhere like you can Sony. This way I ONLY use sony and I haven't had a SINGLE problem in about 2 years of shooting. I've shot probably a couple hundred hours of material with it.
I think the problem isn't the brand its the switching of brands. My camera is probably all lubed up with whatever "horrible" wet lube Sony uses but it's fine until I switch to Panasonic. I say just get something and Stick with it; don't ever switch. It's worked for me. (I'm sure Panasonic ones are great, I just don't like when cheap producers want to "reimburse" your stock that you provided by giving you a bunch of cheap tapes of a brand you don't use, so I chose Sony since many get those and I'm not afraid to use em)
Fine call me crazy.

This came up at the DVX boot camp and the answer was unequivocally and emphatically to use only the Panasonic MQ tapes. While Panny does sell tape to the likes of Maxell, etc. it is not the same quality and the lubes are different. If you want to keep your tape heads from getting fouled up from bad lubes, only use the MQ.

I was using the Panny consumer tapes but have since cleaned the heads and switched to the MQ tapes. Its worth the extra one or two dollars.
