Which tape? -> Panasonic AY-DVM60EK, -EM or XK?

In Switzerland, I can get those 60 minute tapes:

- PANASONIC AY-DVM60EK
- PANASONIC AY-DVM60EM
- PANASONIC AY-DVM60XK

The first is the cheapest, then the second, and the third is the most expensive.

Which one should I buy?

For Panasonic AG-DVX100:

AY-DVM63MQ
AY-DVM63PQ

These two brands are highly recomended for best results.

Go to (amongst others):
www.bhphotovideo.com

They deliver worldwide.

Cheers!

I've been using Sony DVM60PRL , which I get from http://www.taperesources.com for about $3 or $4 - they have worked great for me. I don't think that there is a lot of difference between any brands premium brand and exelence brand, execpt maybe a an added chip (Which I'm not convinced is worth the additional cost). Can anyone speak to whether it is better to go with the same tape the manufacture makes (ex. using panasonic tapes for panasonic cameras ...) or is it just better to go with a good quality tape and stick with that?

actually there is a big difference, never switch from a sony tape to a panasonic tape without cleaning your heads. Sony uses a wet lubrication in thier tapes, and Panasonic's high end tapes use a dry lube. on thier own there is really not that much difference between the two lubes, but if you mix them it makes a glue that does a number on your heads.

Ok well a little late for me but I ran one Panasonic tape which came with the DVX100a then grabbed a 6 pack of TDK tapes at Costco as I was heading out on a shoot. So shot 4 tapes since it was new 1 Panasonic and 3 TDK's.

So the dilemma now is do I go back to the Panasonic tapes? Are TDK's wet or dry and are they a quality tape or not?

Appreciate the feedback.

tdk are garbage, but the green fuji tapes are ok cause they are dry, and not crap.

Thanks fo rthe tip - I've always used the same brand, because I've heard about drop out issues when you switch brands, it makes sense if the lubes are different. So if i'm understanding everything correctly you should choose a high quality brand and stick with it correct?

I looked it up in the manual. There they say, that 'AY-DVM60' is okay/recommended, so I can use any of the ones mentioned above. But as the tapes from www.bhphotovideo.com are cheaper, even with 26$ shipping to Switzerland, I will take ten of the MQ tapes.

i always used SONY in my SONY cams. then once i played out a Panasonic from one of them and it is in trouble since then. numerous cleans didn´t really help. a cam that never dropped out is now dropping out quite often.

in my DVX i again use SONY tapes but i switched from Premium to excellence tapes (€ 8 from amazon with free shipping ;) ).
the Pana dealer wanted to sell me the MQ and PQ, but he understood that we stick with Sonys cos then our decks stay clean (we have 4 other cams here all using sony tapes). he recommended excellence tapes cos they are "harder and don´t smear their coating onto the videoheads". but in general they should be as good as Panasonic tapes he admitted.
