Hello,

I purchased a new PC and it came with an Nvidia Geforce GT 230 video card and I already have an Nvidia Geforce 7900 GTX. I have tried to research and compare the two. The 7900 GTX has served me well over the last two years and I am yet to test the 230 GT yet but thought it good to ask if anyone here can tell me which of the two would be better to use? I am running a quad core 2.66ghz by intel and 8gb ram, 1TB HDD, and 500gb HDD. I am running two 19" widescreen monitors. Going to be shooting in DVCPRO HD and editing in HD. Any facts and opinions would be greatly appreciated. I only have one PCI express 16x slot and one pci express x1 slot as far as express slots go, and 2 PCI slots. I would love to hear from you! Thanks.

The gt 230 claims 1.5gb of memory but not sure if it is the same quality level as the 7900 gtx. both have GPU. So please chime in..

For editing, a Quadro card would work much better than a gaming card. An entry level like the Quadro FX580 runs about $200. Not all program takes advantage of such a card, but it doesn't hurt to have it compared to more expensive gaming cards alternatives that might not be fully utilized anyway.

I have to agree with Huy. I had an Nvidia 9800GT which worked OK. But I have
since upgraded to an Nvidia Quadro FX 1800. Big difference. It's a "middle of
the road" card as Quardro's are concerned. I think I paid around $435.00 for it.

If anyone has time/inclination, I'm seeking similar advice.

Thanks. I stumbled on this thread and found it helpful.

I have a similar dilemma.
Am currently using Quadro FX 1500 with:
2 AMD dual-core Opteron 275 processors (940 slot) w/Tyan S2895 K8WE mobo,
6 GB DDR 400 ECC RAM (4 x 512 MB plus 2 x 2 GB sticks),
dual Sony SDM-59SDR monitors, and
still working primarily in Adobe Production Studio Premium/CS2. (Hoping to upgrade to CS4 this year).
all under XP Pro SP2.

After adding 4 GB of RAM, (making total of 6 GB, even though I know XP Pro doesn't use it all), and installing free version of Neo 2 that came w/Panny HMC150, I get slow, jerky/jittery playback of HMC footage in Neo 2.

Requested Neo Booster (free with recent purchase of HMC150); still waiting for that, but really want to get rid of Neo 2's jittery playback.

Though it has served me well using CS2, I suspect the Quadro FX 1500 may be too weak to handle AVC and Neo2, and am wondering if the Quadro FX 1800 would serve me well even after upgrading to Adobe CS4. (I know Neo requires a video board that handles certain levels of "Shader" processing, but have been unable to ascertain that the 1500 meets the reqs). Or, should I go for an even higher performance board, and might I need something better than the 1800 for CS4?

All informed input/advice welcome.

Thanks.

{QUOTE} "Not much performance gain on those cards. Mercury will currently only support the cards mentioned.( GTX285, CX, FX4800, FX5800) We did test other cards like the 1800 and the difference in CUDA performance was night and day."
