Which microphone preamp? Advice needed!

Update: Just received an Audio Technica AT803 and when used with my Canon camcorder and JL the sound is perfect. Really crisp and no noise. It was that Rode Lav causing all the noise, either its faulty or just plain junk!!!

Good to hear that the AT803 has sorted all your problems: odd about the Rode lav since mine works fine and it has had some good reviews/tests such that by Chad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1djyJxV3hV4). Was it all down to impedance (others will be able to comment on this possibility) or faultiness? Cheers, Roland

Not 100% sure what the problem is but I'm going to see if Rode can sort as its still within warranty. It could be the mic, cable or XLR adapter that has a fault... especially since Chad has used similar system - JL with Rode Lav and we get different results. I know there is a different camcorder being used but still, there seems to be an underlying problem!

It sounds like your Rode lav is defective, but don't condemn the line in general because of one bad experience. I have four of them and they work fine into all the cameras, wireless transmitters and mixers I've tried them with. Get it fixed under warranty and see if the output is improved. I also have a couple of AT803s and they sound OK as well, but they're much bigger than the Rodes and have a clumsy external power box that really seems to get in the way in my rigs.

Its on its way back :)

And does the replacement Rode Lavalier sound OK with your setup (i.e. is the AT803 you bought to replace the Rode lav still much better with your set up)? Cheers, Roland

To be honest I was just going to sell it straight away to recover the costs of buying the AT803. But it would make sense to retest with the mic. I'll give it a blast and let you know!

EDIT: The Rode Lav is now fine with the setup - very little noise. I now need to decide what I'm going to keep!! haha
