hi i was wondering what the best mic is to use when shooting outside when its busy on streets

me64, me62 or me66? i need voices that come from all directions but only from those in immediate proximity of the microphone. there will be a LOT of background noise.

advice appreciated, thanks (personally i'm hoping you recommend the me64)

You could use a Lav mic on each party, although they would pick up alot of noise. If you have a talented boom op, my suggestion would be to use a highly directional mic pointed straight at the mouth from above. Doing this will take away alot of the background noise, since mose of it will be coming from the back, and not down. If you have the resources, two shotguns recording to seperate audio tracks could do it too. An m64 will be less directional, making it easier to record both parties, however, it will pick up more of the background sounds. The me66 will be more directional, picking up less background, but making two audio sources more difficult to record. If all else fails, it is possible to do SOME noise reduction in post using tools such as pro tools or adobe audition

If you haven't already bought into the K6/ME system, don't. There are better microphones out there.

Of the three listed, ME66 would be the better choice...

Unless you don't have phantom power. AFAIK the ME66/K6 is the only boom mic combo (In that price range) that works without phantom.

thanks for the advice

can anyone recommend a decent non-phantom based mic i can use on my camera for the desired effect stated above - any model so long as it is good

cheers again!

The lowest priced shotgun I would consider is the Sanken CS-1.
It's small and it sounds excellent. About $800 or so. It's worth alot more.

If you want to mount it on your camera, you also need a shock mount, like the K-Tek:

You can listen to alot of microphones here:

If by "no phantom" you mean something with a mini-headphone-like plug, then good luck.
Nothing sounds decent that has a miniheadphone plug on it. Hard truth. It sucks.

Hope this helps,
Brian

You must have K6 to ME66, see http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/icm_eng.nsf/resources/K6_overview.jpg/$File/K6_overview.jpg

What's the best mic for "man on the street" interviews? I wouldn't think a shotgun would be effective, and sometimes it's just useful to have a handheld microphone.

The Shure SM58 is a pretty popular dynamic, as well as the Eletro-Voice 635.

You must get the mic right up next to the mouth to get good sound from a handheld dynamic.

Best of luck

i shot a show from a moving horse drawn wagon on a brick street durring Christmas.it was super loud and i had 8 people on the wagon. we used the shotgun mic on my xl2 and addapted it to a boom. we held it out of the camera sight but bellow the subject. the street noise was so loud i thought my audio was going to be trashed. but it was great, just a little background. when you are running a boom mic pointing and placement of the mic are the most important thing. i use the boom most outside.
