Which mac is best for editing

get a good condition used dual processor g5...you'll save hundreds and still have overkill for sd editing...anytime i buy a new mac i get extremely pissed 3 months later when the new version comes out, so i try now to only get used...then you have more cash left to max out ram and maybe buy some other goodies too. i just got a dual 1.8ghz for about $1300, and there's no way you could tell a speed difference between it and the dual 2ghz that runs $1999.

I agree, I will never catch up with technology. bought my G4 PowerMac in 03' used. Too soon to jump on the quad bandwagon, starting to look for a dual G5 as well.

there was a time when you would be pulling your hair our because premiere wouldn't un on your supposedly fast machine

but not so much anymore -- now it seems more like choosing a 4 cylinder car vs a 6 cylinder. the 4 cylinder will get you where you need to go and only on the rare occasion will you notice the difference - like drag racing

almost any newer mac is a viable option for FCP, you might have to wait a little, but it will work. HD, of course, is one of those drag racing situations.

Hi Luis and DCSimpson

I'm looking to get memory too. On the Crucial site they have a good choice of memory. Which did you get? Why? and What's the difference between the selection on their site (there must be a huge difference because some memory is about 500 and some about 1500 dollars for the same quantity and the same machine !)

And Luis did you just get hard drives or some kind of a raid system?

Thanks guys

I agree to buy used, the one bad thing about apple is the upgrades, wish I had the quad. I bought the G5 dual before the quads came out, its still a great machine. I also have a G4 that runs FCP 5 great. Our local CBS affiliate edits with FCP on the mac mini, they say it works great, except it won't run FCP Motion.

I have a G5 dual 1.8 and it works great with FCP 4.5. You should be able to pick one up for a reasonable price used. I'd drop in some more ram and a 2nd hard drive.
