which lens

I am looking to get either the Nikkor 24-85 2.8 lens or the 35-70mm lens 2.8 trying to see which one would work better when I go to Africa?

Go with the 24-85. You have more choices of focal length. Plus its wider. And you know what they say wider is better! (in some cases)

Good luck with your choice!

For Africa?

I say forget both those wides and get the longest lens you can afford.
The Nikkor EF-ED 80-200 f/2.8 is a nice lens. Old, but crisp.

Or you might want to try the new Tamron.
AF28-300MM F/3.5-6.3 XR DI VC LD ASPHERICAL (IF) (this is like the Nikor VR feature)
Not sure when it is released though.

or their
http://www.tamron.com/lenses/prod/18250_diII.asp

or the Nikkor
55-200mm f/4-5.6

Every single person I know who has shot pictures in Africa ALWAYS says, "I wish I had a bigger zoom". Some of the animals do get up close, but for the most part. they are pretty distant.

If you already have a zoom, then ignore what i said and go fo rthe 24-85 :)

The only single lens solution for you is one of the 18-200s like the Nikon for $750 MSPR ($1000 street) or the new Sigma.

I personally agree that if you're doing Africa you want something long, 200mm + a 1.7 TC

If you want wide just get a cheap 18-55mm for $100 off Ebay because @ 18mm that lens is like having a f/3.5 prime (it's very sharp)

Go very very long because you can't be long enough for a trip like this.

Thanks for the respnses but it looks like I am going to be able to get the 17-55 nikkor the 70=200 is out of reach and i will be doing a lot of close up shooting. i also have a 70-300mm sigma so I think that might be good enough. What do u guys think?
