Which laptop for EDIUS 5?

Would I get any benefit by choosing 4 core prosessor for laptop? They run slower than 2-core laptops? Which grachicscard would give the most effect. Would I get any benefit by using more thna 4 gt ram.

Would solindstate harddrive work more steadily when capturing, compared to regular 7200 hard drive. I have constant problem when using my 2 core laptop in capturing (720 50 or 1080 50p)

And lastly, now that new laptops are missind p2/pmcia-cardslots and instead have express cardslot, would using adapters be a good choide (don't have money to buy Panas 5-slot expresscardslot-reader)

thanks already!

I personally would go for a high GHz core2duo rather than a slower core2quad. have also a look in to the i7 cpu family. laptops incorporating them are going to be available soon and they have the great advantage (beside QPI ) to adapt their power and core use depending on the software type and capabilities.

edius5 dose take advantage of the graphic card prepossessing power and available ram, so the faster & bigger here wins as well.

not sure about ssd over hdd regarding capture, but I don't think the problems you are encountering are only due to disk speed. I have used single 7200rpm HDD to capture edit and play back 1080 50i and 720 50p with no problem...

regarding p2 transfer, would you consider directly transferring content from camera to pc via usb (without never taking out p2 cards from the camera)?

some comments:
core2quad according my seller can't really be utilazed by edius 5. On the other hand Squeeser 5 can, so maybe I'll take quad after all.

Direct capture is a mystery, the problem is that I can't really trust it works. That little uncertainlity spoils the whole thing. P2 and firestore have never let me down, but the laptop have done it a few times.... The reason is really a mystery.

P2 transfer is problematic, because the speed of usb. It takes too much time (we do sports filming and are in a hurry to edit stuff in the 15 min breaks between the periods, everything must be ready nearly instantly after the game).

I have heard that there is adaptor express>>pmcia. Haven't got hold on it yet.

If you look up gdame on the GV Edius forum, contact him. He is building a laptop that will rival any desktop. Pretty amazing.

Makes me frustrated that people keep perpetuating this myth.

Faster is always better (assuming the same class).
Transcoding software and other pieces that deal with fixed, finished results or things that can be synthesized out of thin air (I'm talking After Effects) can split the job and write multiple pieces - like separate crews working on parts of a house then putting it all together at the end.

Real-time video processing and playback, on the other hand, does not have that luxury. Even if I process the next half-hour of the timeline... that data needs to be stored somewhere.

Background rendering could use more cores, but background rendering is outside of EDIUS's core design mentality, at least today.

Desided to wait...

Desided to wait...

To get more boost to my duo laptop, I desided only to uppgrade to win 7 and get more ram. By doing this I got smoother running machine. By uppgrading to next level core2 quad laptop, I think there was only limited boost to gain at the moment. So I jump over this generation and wait the next wave. Hopefully there will be more power goming with i7 prosessors.
