Which Lapel Mic for Interviews?

Hi,

I am a hobbyist documentary maker that is steadily getting into more serious projects. I would like to get a better mic for interviewing people.

I've currently been using a wired Sony ECM T145 Condensor mic with my HVX but would like to move into something a little more professional.

I've had a few issues with low level buzz with the T145.

I would like to get a no fuss mic that I can direct inject into the HVX..and that simply works!

Is it worthwhile and reliable to go wireless?

Where is the sweet spot of quality versus affordability?

Any recommendations?

I've considered the Sennheiser w 112-p G2 system with ME2 OMNI Lapel Microphone package.

Alternatively I saw in another thread people recommending the Sony ECM 44.

If your budget was around $600 - $1000US what would you buy?

Thanks!

I recommended the ECM44 but as a $150 mic, it is less mic than you are looking for.
Unless you want to go wireless (not advisable if you can avoid it), you would want to consider a Countryman B6 wired lav, in the $300 range. If you need wireless , use the same mic with a G2.

If your current Sony does not have an XLR jack, that could be your source of the buzz.

Thanks for that...I read some interesting advice from Matthew Clift over at:

http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/one_man_doco.html

He recommended avoiding wireless for simplicity sake..and recommends the Sony ECM 77...

I will also often be in the "one man doco" category...so I think wired makes sense from a 'low fuss' point of view...

The ECM 77 sounds like it could be a good option...

Apparently Dan Brockett will be releasing a comprehensive review on lapel mic options shortly at www.KenStone.net ...should definitely be worth waiting for before making a decision!

The Sanken COS11 is the best sounding LAV mic IMHO. I got mine wired with lectrosonics breakaways and XLR power supplies so that I can use them wired or wireless (you can always rent a lectrosonics system if you need wireless for the day).

Avoid wireless unless you really need it for the shot.

The thing that you may be over looking is a boom mic. A good shotgun or hyper cardioid will sound much better that any lav when boomed close.
